How early is too early?

Anonymous
Just curious. We are on spring break this week. We’ve been catching up on sleep , or trying to. This morning at 9am, the neighbor kids were pounding on the door wanting to play. We were barely up! How early would you say is too early for this?

I mean, even on break my kids are up before 7. But if we had neighbors with kids, I wouldn’t let them knock until 10.

This is a know your neighbor situation. We'd be happy to have you at 9, but know some of the other families on the block move more slowly. Just say, "can you come back at 10, please? 9 is too early for us."

9 seems on the early side, but not unreasonably so. Kids are often awake early--even on a vacation, my kid would never sleep until 9. Rather than trying to figure out if the neighbor kids broke some unwritten rule, just tell them to come back in an hour.

Unless. I know that you are a late sleeper, 9 seems reasonable. 8 is too early.

before 8am would be rude. 9am is totally fine.

Agree.

I'd want to kill anyone who pounded on my door for any reason other than a fire.

Why aren't other parents teaching their kids to knock politely or ring the bell, and count to 30? If nobody's answered by the time you get to 30, leave.

DD's best friend's family (our neighbors) are really late risers and usually cannot play before 10 if then. But almost everybody else I know is up and about before 9:00. I agree it's a know your neighbor thing.

Are they old enough that a sign on the door would work? Maybe that will head them off tomorrow.

9:00 is fine for me. 8:00 would be too early unless we set it up prearranged. But my kid is awake by 6:30 every day.

We typically have activities (swim, soccer, church, etc) that begin around 9 am on weekends, so I don't consider that too early at all. If we didn't have a preplanned activity (such as on break) I'd be looking for something to do around that time.

I have a 7yo, our schedule doesn't drastically change for Spring break. She goes to bed at 8 (sleep around 830/845) and gets up between 7-730. So 9 am would be totally fine with us.

9 would be fine for us. Kids have always been up for 2ish hours by then. If you waited until 10, you might miss us even if the kids would have been keen to play instead of whatever we're doing (playground, errand, museum, etc).

My kids are up by 7 no matter what so fine at our house.

I wish they would sleep in. Still waiting and my oldest is 10.
