Any parents out there NOT hung up on CES?

Anonymous
Would love to hear from other parents who aren’t that hung up on their kids acceptance/rejection. Our 4th grade son didn’t get in last year but didn’t really care. He’s doing very well in his classes and is happy at his school. I am totally fine with my kids in gen pop. Anyone else out there not think their kids is destined to a life of asking “would you like fried with that?”, or am I failing my kid and am just oblivious to it?

Hahaha. My kid performs fairly well, and the CES would definitely not be a good fit overall for him. Sure, some of it sounds great, but he is fine at his local school. I think with adding music and hopefully compacted math, he'll be plenty busy learning!

It sounds like you actually did care about your son not getting in. Take a deep breath and let others be; your son will do fine.

My older went; my younger didn't, and it's totally fine. Younger one is really loving 5th grade at home school, and doing well.

Actually it’s my husband who is now thinking we should have done more to “help” him get in - Saturday school, tutoring, supplementing at home, etc. He’s only now thinking this because one of his coworkers kids got in and she keeps talking about it. I personally am more laid back about the kids school in general, I’m just trying to make him feel a little better about it.

its sort of wasted energy now though, right?

My older one was accepted but didn't go. Younger accepted and went.

Do we regret that the older one didn't go? Not at all.

There are aspects each missed out on by staying or going. One was not hands down better than the other for us.

Mine is in 2nd now and I'm secretly hoping he doesn't get in. I think he's smart enough but not mature enough and it will be a constant battle to get him to put in the effort (though things may change in a year). He is happy in our home school, I am happy in our home school, I'm very involved with the PTA so I know a lot of families/parents and I like having both of my kids at the same school. I honestly don't want to have to make the decision if he does get in.

MOST parents don't care, OP. MANY with kids in 3rd grade aren't even aware this entire thing went down... which I am not going to comment on, because. Well.

I thought basically no one goes.

Oh yes - totally agree. I guess he’s just hearing about it at work and making him feel like he “dropped the ball” somehow. I think my son is fine and will do fine, but this is nagging at him. Which it shouldn’t.

No. I know a bunch accepted and turned it down.

Just read the forum... lots of angst over getting into CES. There are some parents not hung up on CES, but "basically no one goes" to CES is not true, yet.

I do wonder if the change in admissions and opening up more local CES will reduce the desire for magnet CES.
