Expectant and Postpartum Moms
| I'm now at 16 weeks and I STILL haven't gained any weight. The CNM wasn't worried at my last appt two weeks ago, and I wasn't exactly small when I got pregnant (I was a size 12-14), but it still seems weird. While I'm not actively sick hardly at all anymore, and my food aversions have significantly lessened, I still don't have much of an appetite, and I do feel like i have a hard time eating "enough" (whatever that is) -- most food isn't revolting anymore, but I just don't want much. My body has definitely changed though--I'm in maternity pants already with a teeny but visible bump and already had to go up a bra size, but elsewhere I actually look and feel a bit skinnier. Is there a point at which I should be concerned, or should I just focus on good nutrition as I can and rejoice in my fun new shape? |

In my first pregnancy I also didn't gain until the early 2T, and when I discussed it with my Dr he said they don't worry about absence of weight gain until the 2nd half of the pregnancy. I then gained 6 pounds between my 16 and 20 week appts, and proceeded to gain just under 35 lbs total. I'm now 14.5 weeks with #2, and although the m/s was much milder this go around, I still haven't started gaining, so clearly my pregnancy mode is to gain in the 2nd half.
So point being - yes, I think there is a point at which you would be concerned about lack of weight gain, but I don't think you're at it yet. And since from your description it sounds like you started with some extra weight to begin with, as long as you're focusing on good nutrition, I'd say you're good, and enjoy the skinnier arms/legs and pregnant belly! |
| I started gaining weight at about week 14--so by 16wks was up maybe 2 lbs by then?--but boy did I make up for it between weeks 20 and 30 when I definitely had an appetite and expanded. I would say as long as you're getting good nutrition (try to get in enough calcium and protein) and take prenatals, you're okay for now. I actually never wanted to eat a real breakfast, but would make protein shakes with skim milk, bananas, ice, and chocolate protein powder (the only kind I tolerate is called Optimum Nutrition--i find the rest horrible)--that way I knew I was getting in a good dose of protein and calcium right away, so even if I didn't want much later I'd have at least that in my system. |

I didn't gain any weight until 5.5 months (was wearing my regular clothes until about 6 months and didn't tell my work until then either since i was not showing).
My doc was not concerned. I made up the weight in the third trimester--gaining about 20-25 pounds in the final 3 months. Don't stress out too much. Everybody is different. Your ob will monitor and let you now if she is concerend. |
| I was your size pre-preganancy and I didn't gain until 20 weeks. As long as WHAT you are eating is nutritious, all is well. My dr wasn't concerned, this happens to lots of women, especially those who aren't sticks to start with. Rejoice, be active, eat nutritiously, and don't worry about no weight gain. Really, better this than having gained TOO much weight so far. It's still early. |
| Am at 14 weeks and have gained at most one pound from my pre-pregnancy weight (2 pounds since morning sickness stopped). Not worried right now, just enjoying all the foods that made me throw up a few weeks ago! |
| I lost 5 pounds in the first trimester. Dr. was not a bit worried. I was also size 12-14 at start of pregnancy and basically the dr said she was fine with weight loss (as long as it was not deliberate!) during the first trimester and was fine with either none or just little weight gain after that. I started to gain by about week 16 and by end of pregnancy I was 25 pounds heavier than lowest weight but it was all baby, placenta, and other fluids, etc, because at my 6 week check up I was back to 14 week weight and 5 pounds lighter than at the start!! |
| I'm fairly thin and gained no weight during the first trimester with my first, and now at 12 weeks with #2, still no weight gain. I gained most of my weight during the latter half of the 2nd tri and the 3rd tri. My Dr. wasn't concerned. As long as the baby is growing, you are fine. |
I was a super-lean size 6 when I got pregnant and I had only gained 6-7 lbs by 16 weeks. I didn't have morning sickness, but quitting drinking made me lose a couple pounds initially. I made up for it by gaining 3 lbs a week (about 50% water weight, 50% milkshakes) in the 3rd trimester. My sister didn't gain until midway through her second trimester due to severe nausea. She was a size 10 or so. My friends who were in the 10-14 range when they got pregnant didn't seem to gain much overall and they have beautiful, healthy babies who were of normal size. I hope you regain your appetite, or at least make sure you're eating healthy foods for the baby. Good luck!
