Can I wear a brown sweater with black boots?

Anonymous
I have to exchange something at Boden and the sweater I am looking to get is only available in brown. That's fine, but all the boots I have (knee high and ankle) are black. Can I wear black boots (specifically the knee high ones) with a brown sweater?

Sure.
Just accessorize.

If your pants are black or grey, yes.

Black and brown is one of the biggest color combo trends this year. Just don't put brown below and black on top. You need a scarf, top or other accessory to tie the look together.

sure. just don't wear brown pants...that would look weird.

Yes! Brown sweater, black pants or leggings, black boots or brown sweater, jeans and black boots fine; or brown sweater black skirt and tights and black tall boots fine; Grey would ok, not great. Another great option: Brown sweater, dark red pants and black boots ok.

Totally disagree with this. All black outfit (e.g. black tunic, black leggings) with brown Frye boots looks amazing!

In general, you never want to wear your lightest color on your feet. Your shoes should always be the same color as the outfit (or very close) or darker.

To OP -- go for it and OWN IT!

The old rule about never wearing lightest color on your feet is OUT. Europeans are very fashion forward and if you ever spend any time over there you will see that they break these rules and LOOK GREAT doing it...

you keep posting this outdated information. Do you travel? Women and men in Europe are so much better at color. They wear lighter colored shoes. Think rich cognac with navy pants or grey or brown; red with black pants or dark brown; etc. This is such 1950s advice (sorry).

Totally agree. Thanks for the posts. I was the second poster with a similar message. I love the nude shoes in these pictures. Also light colored metallics are great without hose with darker colors on top. I hate matchy matchy DC dressing. Let's pump it up ladies!

Thanks all! It's funny, because after looking at the Boden website (a UK company), I noticed several of the women wearing brown boots with a darker charcoal or black sweater! So I guess they are more fashion forward than we are.

Not that this counts for much, but Stacy on What Not to Wear says that all neutrals go together, so do black and brown to your heart's content. After seeing the look a bit more recently, I think it makes the entire outfit look much richer than monotone neutrals.

Agree with the more forward thinking posters. Amanda Brooks stated in her book that if she were wearing an all-black suit, she'd probably wear some brown shoes and carry a brown bag just for contrast. There was a pic next to the text -- looked good. The whole book is excellent.

Another vote for the brown-black combo. By the way, I have a pair of very elegant Channel shoes in brown and black.
