Where can I get a decent free makeover? And what is "in" and what is "out" regarding makeup?

Ok, full disclosure. I have barely worn any makeup for years!!! I was able to get away with it when I was younger, but not anymore. Oh, well. Any recommendations for makeovers and what is in and out of style are welcome.

I'm in my mid 30s and I stay home, so nothing too "young".

IMHO, if you have a good complexion, foundation is a bit out these days, though it's bound to come back, and I'm sure some people will disagree with me. But, again, IMHO, if you have good skin, tinted moisturizer is what's in, at least for daytime. Nighttime on the town, maybe you go for the foundation.

Gel eyeliner is in, and it's fabulous.

NARS makes the best blushes out there, also IMHO.

But see what you get from the many other beautiful and knowledgeable ladies on our beauty forum.

Oh, oh -- this year, red lipstick in also in. But if you're going to wear it, you have to play down everything else in order to avoid looking like a clown. No blush. No eyeshadow. Just mascara and eyeliner, maybe some powder on your face, and the kick-ass red lipstick. If you want to go there.

Go to a Bobbi Brown counter at Nordstrom and have them make you up. Explain that you are SAH, have no more than 5 minutes to put on makeup, and want to use as few products as possible. (The Bobbi Brown website has good tips.) As for what is in--natural but a little more refined is always in. Get your brows groomed, skin cleared up, a simple haircut. Use a tinted moisturizer or concealer, tinted lip gloss, mascara.

OP, start off small with just a couple of products and then add as needed. Red lipstick requires real skill - I'd probably go with products that are easy to apply and blend. Too many people try to do it all, buy it all and then get overwhelmed. Products end up sitting in drawers.

As for free makeovers, well.... you get what you pay for. Stores are in business to sell products. Free things without strings attached are non-existent.

If you go to a counter and tell them you only want 1 or 2 products, are a cosmetics newbie, etc. then they will assist you with those few products and maybe even show you how to apply them.

OP, do not concern yourself with what is in and out now. Find a winter day look and ask them to help you make into an evening look. The trends are for the young girls or people who are really into makeup and once you have some confidence, that is when you look into the trends.

I like the Lancome Counter at Neiman's.

Before resigning yourself to "needing" makeup, you might just need to revamp your skin care to account for the changes in your skin. That might brighten, even and smooth your skin enough that you will no longer feel like you need makeup for daytime.

I've been pleased with Sephora (the one in Georgetown) for makeovers. I've also requested very portable makeup, as I'm often putting it on in the parking lot before I go into work. I like Sephora b/c the makeup artists don't work on commission and have access to a slew of products so they can really find the best match for your skin tone and condition.

Personally, I love Clinique's Almost Makeup & Almost Lipstick. I use a liquid eyeliner (Maybelline) and Clinique Touch Base and a variety of mascara (still looking for the perfect one). This is a quick way to look polished without looking too "done". Clinique works well for my rather sensitive skin.

I agree with this PP but also want to add something. If you wear red lipstick, you MUST have super white teeth. Red lipstick makes teeth appear more yellow than they actually are.

You actually need to match the red with the teeth - warm or cooler reds will either whiten or yellow the teeth.

You also need a lipliner for red and take your time applying it. Best for those with shapely or fuller lips. Thin should avoid it - or work with a sheer red gloss.

I would avoid lipliner like the plague. So 1990.

I've never heard of gel eyeliner - what makes it so fabulous? Liquid eyeliner always looks super heavy on me, and kohl runs like crazy.

It's not really liquidy -- it comes in a little pot (at least Bobbi Brown's does). It's easier to work with, and it stays on longer, and it looks better. I actually use L'oreal's Intensifique and it's not really a gel, but like a very thin tiny little brush (but not really a brush) -- anyway, I pull my eyelid up a tiny bit and touch it gently into my lash line -- looks good. Can't do that with a pencil. Have to press to hard. You can be much more precise with gel or even some of the newer, better made liquid liners.

You actually do need lipliner with red lipstick - it needs to be applied with precision. Something just slightly darker than your lipcolor will do.

Gel eyeliner is fine although it does tend to dry out too quickly. All my Bobbi Brown's didn't last as long. I avoid pencils as the color doesn't last due to the cream in the formula and use a dark powder eyeshadow instead. The powder stays in place, smudges easily when you want to blend and comes off much more easily than a real liner.
