first iui cycle at shady grove---aghghgh-- small follicles, elevated LH...need your help...

Hello,
I finished my first round of 50 mg of clomid at Shady Grove and went in for my 12 day vaginal ultrasound and bloodwork.....(my diagnosis is PCOS). I had
3 follicles...with the largest one measuring 8 cm..... no where close to the 18 cm that they like to see for the iui. However, my LH was elevated, indicating
that my body either ovulated or was in the process of trying to ovulate, despite the fact that my follicles were too small to result in a viable pregnancy. I am
supposed to go in tomorrow for more bloodwork and another ultrasound. They will then determine whether they will either cancel the cycle, give me more clomid this
cycle/and or give me something to keep my LH from rising as my follicles mature.

I will be sad/frustrated if the cycle is canceled....I was hoping to go through the Thanksgiving holiday season with a completed iui and the anticipation of a possible pregnancy...

Has something similar happened to anyone else? What meds were you given? Did they work? If your cycle is cancelled, how long do you have to wait to start your next treatment, if you don't menstruate normally?

I had something similar while on clomid at SG...if I remember correctly, on day 14, the 2 lead follicles were like 12-14mm, but my LH was surging, so my RE went ahead w/the trigger and we did the IUI, even though in the back of my mind I knew that wouldn't work (it didn't). I think some people just don't respond well to clomid. They may switch your meds or do something else next time...Hang in there!

I know it is frustrating! Keep in mind that the 1st time is a crapshoot. If this month doesn't work out, they will certainly adjust your meds to compensate for what didn't work out. You still have 2-3 days for growth (I had my 2 IUIs done at the 13-14 day mark). I imagine next month they will either increase the dose for clomid or move you to an injectable (which isn't that bad).

My first IUI cycle with SG was cancelled for the opposite reason - overstimmed and had too many large follicles so high risk for multiples.

It was very depressing knowing I had mature eggs and had to let them go to waste. It absolutely SUCKS to have a cycle cancelled.

I finally finished waiting out my cancelled cycle and was ready to start again, and - perfect timing - I got the flu on cd1 and was not able to go for my day 3 baseline so I could not start. ANOTHER wasted cycle.

I just wanted to say I know how upsetting it is to have a cycle cancelled, and I hope it works out for you.

OP here....Thanks ladies, for your feedback.....I really appreciated your input!! There is good news and bad news I went in for my bloodwork and ultrasound today......the follicles showed some growth.....so,the plan is to bring me back in Friday...if there still is growth, they will put me on a second round of clomid........and look to do the iui next week. The sucky part is that, if it happens, the iui will take place the day after Thanksgiving, thus forcing us to delay our plans to go to our in-laws until Friday (they live 4 hours away) ........and letting the proverbial infertility cat out of the bag and having to share with them the reason why we are going out there later................... oh jesus ........ This is almost as bad as my first cycle of clomid.....where we were at my parent's house in arizona, during our time to get groovy......we were staying in the bedroom opposite from my parents'.......on twin beds pushed together........with giant oil paintings hung on the wall, of my sister and myself as little girls, staring down at us. The rest of the room was decorated in hundreds of dog ribbon awards my mother won with our now deceased Boxer. The last night of my peak ovulation, my husband came down with food poisoning from bad Chinese food, and I had to beg for sex (which was ultimately denied).

8) Okay...enough "kvetching"

If you have your IUI next week, wouldn't that be way past normal ovulation timing? If you don't ovulate by days 13-16, then I would scrap the cycle and try again. I also have PCOS and had to cancel a cycle because follies weren't mature by day 16. RE referred to the eggs as "old" by the time I finally ovulated around day 23. The next time, they increased my meds and had me do a trigger shot to force the release of the egg. It worked.

Hmmm.....that thought crossed my mind....that perhaps a late ovulation would result in a poor quality result....but the nurse never mentioned that on the phone today.....
