Quick car buying questions!

We are looking to upgrade. We still owe on our current vehicle, but it’s worth much more than we owe. We want to know how much they will give us for our trade-in (not interested in selling it privately at this time, need this done quickly.) The salesperson has inquired “how much do we currently owe”, but I don’t want to tell them. I just want to know what they’d give us.

Also, don’t care what the monthly payment would be (we have a wide range we will be willing to pay), just want to know the actual sales price of the vehicle. They just keep asking, “Well, what are you looking to pay a month.” Just tell me the price of the car.

If you’ve BTST recently, what words should I be using in my follow up? Thanks!

1. Go to Carmax. They will give you a quote that is binding for 1 week. Super easy and they don’t play around.

2. Just say - please just give me your best out the door price. We are shopping around and the best price will win.

Find a different salesperson. You should go to a few dealerships anyways.

"How much do you owe?" Reply: "That's not relevant. What is the value for this trade-in?"

"How much are you looking to pay a month?" Reply: "That's not relevant. What is your bottom line price for the car."

Later, rinse, repeat until you get the answers you need.

All via email...get out the door price quotes from 3-4 dealers, get the last 2 to do best and final. Getting market intel on value of your current car is important and can be done separately and easily online.

Usually the dealers will try to make more on the trade than the new car, so if your car is worth $20 they'll give you 18 but a rock bottom price on new.
