New North Middle School --> Ida B. Wells Middle School

It will be Ida B. Wells MS, aka Wells MS. As a neighbor (with older kids) I approve!

From the principal:

Dear Wells MS Community:

Today, on the 88th anniversary of her passing, DCPS announced its recommendation for New North Middle to be named Ida B. Wells Middle School. We are thrilled with this recommendation and feel honored to represent such a strong activist, journalist, mother and leader. Her legacy of pursuing justice and equality aligns perfectly with our social justice enrichment model for our academic programming! I'll be sharing more about this in future emails, so stay tuned to learn more about what a social justice focused enrichment model means!

With the announcement of the name, I need your help with selecting a logo! Please see below and vote to help us pick our school logo. The students at all four feeder schools voted on school colors and we arrived at navy, silver/gray and lime green! I love that these colors are fairly unique and uncommon within DCPS and we are excited to represent them well! Thanks in advance for your votes!

With gratitude,

Megan Vroman
Principal

I think that's a great name too! Better than what I suggested.

Great name honoring a great person. I've heard good things about the new principal and wish the school all the best!

I was getting used to "New North" but like the choice. Wonder if it will end up "Wells" or "Ida B." for short?

The principal started her note with "Dear Wells community"

Also I don't think people would view "Ida B Middle School" as particularly respectful to its namesake.

Wells should feed into Walls!! Lol!

I anticipate the same success as BM, Coolidge, Cardozo, Dunbar, and all the other renovation jewels in DCPS crown!

Love the DCUM skepticism. Always last-man-standing conservatism.

You're absolutely right! There are lots of DCPS renovation success stories. Like, the most recent addition to Deal. And the one before that. And, the one before that too.

The history of DCPS renovation success is like a... history of renovations to Deal.

Doesn't it really depend on wh feeds into the school and what programs they offer. As a IB for Brookland I welcome the new school as a option. BM is doing better and might be a stronger school in a few years. But, having one more school that could be a strong option for many middle class families isn't a bad thing at all. I hope it does well!
