The AC Cugini Story

Anonymous
Does anyone know what happened to AC Cugini? The club at an 04 and 05 girls teams based in Frederick and playing in the top divisions of EDP and in competitive brackets at top area tournaments the last two years but disappeared last year.

Owner was a scammer. Also got in trouble for recruiting players from other clubs. They folded this year.

It’s too bad the Frederick area does not have a decent club. So much sprawling area. FC Frederick has a joke of a philosophy, concentrated on getting kids to play High School soccer. Then you have Alliance, FCSC, and now TOCA.

All the good players end up in NoVA, SAC or Bethesda.

That is really too bad. I visited several of his practices and he really did a nice job of developing players. He had both of his girls teams in the top divisions of EDP. You are right about Fredrick although an elite player can access the Soccerplex and Columbia (WSMD). Bethesda and Rush are also possible options as you are going against rush hour traffic.

Where did the players on those Cugini teams end up? Maybe that is why FC Frederick seems to be doing much better this year.

In "trouble for recruiting players from other clubs"?

Exactly what kind of trouble can a coach get into over "recruiting"?

Over charged; told Girls' teams/families they were going to go to Italy, used they're money to take only the boys. Other things I care not to discuss...

They broke up an Alliance Soccer Club team, not sure if '05 or '06? One of the coaches was also a head of EDP region for our DMV area, which was a conflict of interest. Complaint was filed against them at MSYSA. That coach resigned and remains at EDP now.

Too bad because the Italian coach knew how to develop players and both the 04 and 05 teams were competitive.

It is unfortunate. I agree he could develop young players as well. His partner at EDP was also an excellent coach.

That coach also decimated the 2001 Boys team that had been together for many many years. Announced before the Spring season that he was going to AC Cugini......was recruiting players during the season--- at one point he even used a practice to bring in coached from around the region to see the boys and pitch the AC Cugini Club- at an alliance practice. He was pushed out- boys from that team spread out to at least 6 clubs that I can think of- majority of those boys play at two high schools that are close to eachother. One ended up as 2A state champ this past year. Those that went to Cugini left very dissapointed because it folded- lots of angry parents and shady dealings. Team was not successful but they got to see Italy at least.

Was a money grab- selling spots in the club for teams to jump from other clubs as a whole. Its a shame the boys 2001 was decimated, and then the 04 girls followed.

All I know is that the Italian could develop. My DD never joined the club but we did attend several practices and he was teaching things that I never saw at any other practices including at other clubs.

but he was only at 1 out of 4 2001 (and 02 as they couldn't get enough commitments to field a strictly 2001 team) boys practices, about the same amount of games, and practically NONE of the 2004 girls anything ever. The girls were coached by the EDP guy and so were the boys when fabio wasnt there.

What do you mean that he got in trouble for recruiting players from other teams? Don’t most coaches do this?

The other coach was managing EDP which was a conflict of interest. Basically he had to choose EDP or Cuiguini

Cugini MD folded because it was poorly received, not doing well, not enough players, and not sustainable on a financial aspect. Lots of promises not delivered. It was a good idea that wasnt done correctly. (And was also attempted in a very saturated market)
