Expectant and Postpartum Moms

Hello,
I just relocated to the area and am desperately trying to find an OB. I have been ttc for about 6 months and am 4 days late for my period, took a test that came back neg. I am high risk pregnancy and have tried getting appts with Dr Jane Piness, Dr Sandra Caskie, and Dr Williams, none of which are available for about 6 months. Does anyone have an OB that they would recommend that isn't quite as booked? I am almost 35 so it would be great to find someone who can address possible fertility issues in addition to high risk pregnancy. Thanks! |
| Sorry, no OB recommendation (many are booked way in advance for routine visits), but for fertility issues I'd skip the OB and go straight to a reproductive endocrinologist or acupuncturist if I were you. Oh, and possibly a CVS Minute Clinic could give you a blood test? Best of luck to you! |
| where do you live? That might help you get more responses. |
thanks for your advice! Would you have a recommendation for an RE or acupuncturist? That may be a good first step. I live in Arlington and am really nervous how difficult it is to get an appt. My first daughter was a bit premature after 6 weeks of bedrest, so I am really hoping to find a good Dr without waiting forever!! |

I have since switched away from RHJ (Reiter, Hill, Johnson and Nevin) for reasons mostly related to wanting a natural birth, but they are a big OB practice with experienced Drs, so if you don't care which Dr specifically you see, you can likely get an appt there sooner. Or at least have an appt while you wait for one of the high-risk Drs to open up. And if you GET pregnant in the meantime, I'm guessing that being in a practice already could get you a faster referral.
Good luck! |
| I have read some uncertain postings on RHJ, and everyone seems to really like the dr's at Women to Women. I received a call back and can get an appt fairly soon with Dr Gwendolyn Cobbs at Women to Women. I'll probably take the appt with Dr Cobbs as I really need to see a Dr asap. Has anyone had any experiences with her? Thanks! |

Try Georgetown - they have a lot of doctors and might be able to get you in soon.
Good luck! |
| Try Dr. Bolan at Georgetown. Good luck! |

The Drs. at Medical Faculty Associates at GWU are fantastic and specialize in high risk. Drs. Larsen, Bathgate or Macri.
For the RE, I highly recommend Columbia Fertility and Dr. Sacks. He is wonderful. They are located at 24th & M in DC. |
| Others here have complained in the past about not being able to get a new Ob appt with Dr. Piness for months. I would strongly encourage you to try the doctors at Arlington Women's Center. They 3 or 4 doctors and a midwife, so you shouldn't encounter the backlog that Piness has as a solo practitioner. I delivered my 2 healthy, adorable daughters there and couldn't say enough about all the docs in the practice (I was also 36 and 39 when I gave birth and had complications; they were stunningly good about it all). My "main" doctor there is Dr. Masel--she's unbelievably wonderful, kind, caring, etc--but you end up seeing all the OBs (and the midwife) at some point during the pregnancy. They also share call with a few other practices--including Piness--so you could still find yourself being delivered by Piness in the end after all. Good luck!! |
I saw Dawit Assefa for acupuncture, with great results (pregnant first cycle). http://dawithealing.com/ For fertility, you might check the TTC board as there are lots of discussions on clinics there. Shady Grove is the big clinic here; many like them and they have good numbers, but some criticize them for having a one-size-fits-all approach. Good luck! |
| My OB is Dr. Robert Footer, a solo practitioner, he is in DC and I love him. I switched to his practice when I was already pregnant and I got an appointment the very next week. It only took 1 week! he person who makes appts, her name is Trisha, she is really nice. If you tell her that you think you are pregnant and you are worried about being high risk, she will fit you in. Good luck! |
| OP, Dr. Cobbs is great. All of the doctors in that practice are first-rate - I've seen all of them during my current pregnancy. |
| Dr. Sarah Poggi in Alexandria is good. |

Um, if you are under 35 and have only been TTC for 6 months, isn't it a little soon to investigate the infertility route?
I go to Women to Women and are pretty sure they would tell you to keep trying for at least a while longer. For high-risk issues you can't beat Dr. McLaren, who used to be at VHC but now has his own practice in Fairfax. |
