It’s time to invest in a dining table. We’d like 4 chairs and a bench, for company and kids. We want it to be timeless, durable, great quality.
Is room and board the only way to go? Thanks. |
| There’s no such thing as “timeless” furniture. |
| I would buy an antique table with leaves. Everything else will look dated in 15 years. |

I don't know if this is realistic for you, but we just had a woman in North Carolina make our dining room table and bench. It's about a six hour drive, but the work is beautiful and it was $1200 for both pieces.
We are moving there, but if I wasn't moving there, I'd still buy it from her and figure out how to rent a uhaul to bring it back to DC and drive down there to get it. I looked everywhere in furniture stores and couldn't find anything nearly as nice. |
This was an option also, just getting one handmade. |
I was thinking not ornate or glass top. |

We got our dining room table from Vermont Wood Studios about four years ago and it's gorgeous.
https://vermontwoodsstudios.com/categories/dining-room-furniture We did a custom build -- Shaker, with an oval top, and two leaves to be able to expand for company. Not cheap, but fantastic quality, and we won't ever need to replace it. https://vermontwoodsstudios.com/products/vt-shaker-custom-table#.XJi5Q6BKick |
| Get a Parsons table from Room and Board. You can customize in many ways. |
Parsons tables are not timeless. They are already looking dated. |
Parsons tables originate to the 1930s. |
| Benches are uncomfortable. |

We have had ours ten years and still love. |
Everything has a date because things exist in time and are not "timeless." Even rocks, if you trained your eye. |
| Try Bassett’s Bench Made line. Made in VA. We love ours. |
+1 I hate having to sit on a bench unless I’m at a picnic. |
