| This is the first year I’m hearing about a 4th grade teacher using a video made by a colleague to “teach” math. This seems to be an orange or red flag about the capabilities of this teacher for AAP. What is your thought/opinion on this? Is ithis happening at other centers, too? |
I wouldn't assume that anyone teaching elementary school is particularly adept with math. |
| Wasn't there a huge thread about departmentalization at Haycock a year or so ago? This is why they do departmentalization.. so the teachers that are good at teaching math can focus on that. |
I haven't heard anything about videos, but my kid's math teacher makes them do Dreambox for 1/4 of their math time. All of the kids hate the Dreambox so much. |
|
I would prefer a vetted video to a fumbling teachers presentation.
TreChers are human their deliver fluctuates day to day, videos are much better/more reliable and if animated probably a better visualization of the material. |
| So why the heck the “video dependent” teachers are getting a salary raise? |
Are they only teaching math? |
Speak up. The teacher is not supposed to be doing that. |
| AAP uses Dreambox? What the hell? Dreambox is dreadful. My kid hates it. I hate it. We’re paying for IXL on the side. It’s much much better. |
| In my kids class (AAP) they work on math problems in class and learn subject matter at home via videos. So Tuesday night at home they learn circumference of a circle, etc....Wed. in class they work on it. It's called reverse something. It irks me to no end. |
It's 5th grade AAP, even. Not only do the kids hate it, but I think they all feel a bit insulted by having to do it. |
| In GE my kids had a better teacher explaining math and preparing lessons. Dreambox, videos and other depressing programs that are used even during instruction time are quite an insult. |
|
| Our ES abandoned Dreambox this year. We're using Prodigy now instead. So far, I like it much better. My kids only use it during "free time" though. It's not required by the teacher. |
Flipped classroom. Works well with AAP kids...not so much with gen ed. |
