Drinking and Pumping?

Anonymous
I’m exclusively breastfeeding and pump twice a day - once in the morning and night. My baby has been STTN for a couple of weeks now. My husband and I have started having more downtime together in the evenings, and wine is sometimes part of it. I have not had a drink yet, but would like to enjoy 1-2 glass once or twice a week. I feed him at 7pm ( 8pm bedtime) and pump around 10/11pm. He will either sleep until 7 or wake up around 4/5 for a feeding. Is it safe to have a drink around 9 and pump at 10/11? Is it safe to drink 1-2 glass and feed if he wakes up at 4/5? I could dump the milk, but would prefer to save it.

You dont need to pump and dump but I would not pump and save milk after you've been drinking. Just don't pump on nights that you drink.

The general rule is that it takes 2 hours per drink for the alcohol to clear your breastmilk. Could you pump around 9 instead of 10/11? You may get a little less but you wouldn't have to worry about alcohol in your milk. And you're totally fine to nurse at 4/5 after a couple glasses the night before.

IMO, it's important that you take care of your own needs and if you do have to pump after drinking just dump it and don't feel guilty. A couple glasses of wine with your husband is worth it.

How old is your baby?

What does child’s age have to do with anything?

Google Jack Newman and drinking. There is an excellent post where someone did the science.

In any case, your breast milk alcohol content equals your blood alcohol content. In almost every case, this is less than dealcoholized drinks or juice.

FWIW, the most recent studies show there is much less alcohol transferred to breast milk than doctors used to assume. If I were you, I would pump like usual and then just mix that bag w/ my pumped morning bag (if I was worried, which I wouldn't be for one glass of wine). The alcohol in either would be negligible.

Let me explain this for you. For example, if the child is 9 months old than she doesn't need to pump at night at all. If the child is 8 weeks old, than she should continue pumping at night to keep up her supply and keep breastmilk in the fridge in case of an unexpected midnight wake up when she's been drinking.

Any other questions, or were you just looking to start an anonymous argument on the internet?

If you are not buzzed, then you're good to go.

I often will divide the milk up. Divide 1oz of it into other bottles.

OP here. My baby is a little over 3 months old. I started pumping after baby was born to increase supply. I make enough milk and only pump to build a freezer stash. He does get 1-2 bottles of frozen a week, but I breastfed him the rest of the time. I guess I wasn’t clear, but I don’t pump to give him bottles for the next day. I’m going back to work in a couple of weeks and want to save up as much milk as I can. I can easily get buzzed by 1-2 drinks. I will try the trick of pulling earlier at 9pm.

Why are you even considering drinking when your child is only 3 months old? Get your priorities straight and stop being so selfish.

Oh, go jump in the lake. There's nothing selfish about having a glass of wine with your spouse in the evening. My OB and all the research I did agreed that if you're safe to drive, you're safe to nurse. Have a glass with or right after dinner, pump an hour or so later, and you're fine.
