Mad. Got seasonal and H1n1 vac and now have flu!

Anonymous
I got the seasonal shot as soon as it was available. Stood in line for the flu mist on 10/31. Today I have aches, fever (low grade so far) head ache, fatigue, diarrhea, cough. No runny nose though.

I really felt invulnerable once two weeks passed after the vac. I'm really bummed.

Well now. I guess we have some anecdotal evidence . . . that may not be "statistically significant" but is worth noting nonetheless.

I'm sorry you got sick, OP.

It could be something else. I too got both shots in October and am now sick with a fever and my doc said it is most liekly not the flu but rather a bacterial infection. I am on antibiotics.

i got the flu shot and got the flu last year anyway. they aren't a fail safe.

You might not have swine flu, it might be rhinovirus (cause of common cold) which is exceptionally bad this year.

I have low-grade fever, sore throat, cough/congestion in my chest, chills, stuffy/runny nose and am not convinced it is H1N1. I did NOT get the H1N1 vaccine, but my kids had the swine 2 weeks ago and I did not get it when they did. I am f*cking miserable. Giving it one more day then I'm off to the doctor's office.

OP, I've always heard that you can still get the flu if you've been vaccinated, but if you do, it will be milder than if you weren't vaccinated.

Think how much worse you'd feel if you didn't get your vaccine!

It isn't perfect -- I think they say flu vaccination is about 70% effective? Regardless, no fun, I'm sorry. As a pp said, it is likely reducing severity, at least.

A horrible virus was going around my office this summer, but a few folks got tested and it was not flu. One person also got tested for mono. I am healthy and fit and got hit really hard - had a fever which I haven't had in years and felt like crap for 4 weeks. I finally got prescribed antibiotics and felt instantly better. So could be something like that.

Not every illness is a flu, colds can be really horrible too. They are not always just a sniffle and a sneeze.

More likely than not, it is something you weren't vaccinated against.

OP here, diagnosis, flu, treatment, Tamiflu, verdict from doctor re: vaccine: I would be much sicker if I hadn't gotten misted. My immune system seems to already be winning. I will be on the alert though for the backlash symptoms - the second wave of being even sicker....

Sad part, to be safe I sent my 2 YO to live with daddy (single mom) for a few days to protect her

OP here, diagnosis, flu,

Did you test positive with the rapid-test in the Dr.'s office?

Haven't gotten results yet.... Guess the swab they did on me is not that "rapid"!

Ditto PP re it might not be h1n1--same bug hit our house and am pretty sure it was not h1n1.

If they swabbed you, please report back. It would be very interesting to know whether it is one of the strains included in the vaccinations or not.
