My daughters hair (age 4) is a nightmare. It is shoulder length and covered in tangles every night. There are so many tears shed over brushing that I just want to chop it all off! An anyone offer some suggestions? Here is a bit more detail:
1. She swims a few times a week and we use ultra swim to wash out the chlorine 2. We condition her hair a few times a week between washing to make it easier to brush 3. It always feels sticky - we use a detangler and I can’t figure out if this is making things worse 4. Her hair has some natural curls/waves, she likes to wear it down 5. We braid it before bed so it is easier to fix in the morning 6. We use a wet brush The biggest issue a the amount of tangles and stickiness of her hair. Please help! |
Wash every night with argon oil or Moroccan oil conditioner. Smooth with fingers in shower.
Is it sticky from food or something? |
Do you comb the conditioner through it before rinsing? What detangler do you use? I got one from the Snip-Its salon that seems to work well on my dd’s hair. Not sticky at all. |
Condition every time you shampoo, with a conditioner that has "slip." I like Aussie Moist Conditioner.
Best detanglers: Kinkly Curly Knot Today Aussie Hair Insurance Unite 7 Seconds I would put detangler in her hair before her activity, before you wash/condition, and after you condition, if you really want to do an over the top job of detangling. But just using a detangler after conditioning should be fine. - Living in a house full of long hair |
PP here. Yes - comb through the conditioner while it is in her hair, with a wide tooth pick |
Get rid of your brush. Only use a comb. Start detangling from the bottom and work your way up to the roots.
Use conditioner every single day. Also, coconut oil is great for detangling. |
If she has curly/wavy hair, it's better not to brush it when it's dry (even with a wet brush). Can you braid it after washing it? |
Keep it braided all the time. |
I find detanglers can cause that sticky feeling, so try laying off them.
My daughter has long fine slightly wavy hair that tangled easily. I’ve recently discovered the Garner Fructis Grow Strong conditioner is AWESOME for making it so much easier to brush out. I also keep her hair braided as much as possible, and try to brush it out and braid it every night. |
Cut it!!
Waited a long time to do that for DD (also 4 and also swims). Cut it chin length and am so happy and she is too! |
If I were you I would get a cute bob for the summer. When my dd had tangles it was so much easier and make life a lot better. She has her whole life for long hair. I actually think cutting it makes it healthier. |
This is ridiculous- get her a hair cut. Poor kid is suffering and has already probably been brainwashed that she needs long hair to be “pretty”. |
Chop it all off. Everyone will be happier.
I don’t understand this obsession so many moms have about their daughters having long hair. |
Op here - none of us are obsessed with long hair, it is just touching her shoulders but at this length it lets me braid it which has been helpful for preventing tangles overnight and when she lets me, put in ponytails to ask help minimize tangles. We do brush when the conditioner is in, the only thing that saves us from tears, but there are some nights we have to skip a bath because of the time which is when the tears happen. We have a few different leave ins but maybe I will ditch for the argon oil - I have a big bottle of Moroccan oil so can easily switch to that and see if it helps. Thanks for the suggestions. |
I use adult conditioner on my two girls about twice a week. One has very curly hair. In the mornings, I spray with water and then use a wet brush. |
