January Vacation Destination Ideas

Hi all --

We're heading out for our first family vacation in January -- very excited....but, have no idea where to go! Our son will be 11 months. We have a 7-10 window and are willing to fly somewhere interesting or somewhere warm.

Any suggestions of general places or actual accomodations?

I think it depends on what your vacation style is.

Do you like the beach? Do you want city life? Do you want a place with a kid's club or a nanny? Do you want a cold weather place? Do you want a hotel or more villa?

I'm always partial to Disney, either in FL or CA.

Or you could do a cruise.

I like San Diego as an idea. Lots to do, different types of accomodation choices.

The Caribbean is nice in January.

I would go to the Carribean if you want a beach vacation - otherwise, Disney World.

One of our more interesting winter vacations was in Arizona - Grand Canyon, Sedona, Phoenix, Tucson.

Costa Rica. Beautiful, not difficult to get to, and very kid friendly.

With an 11 month. Hang by the beach in the Carribean. Other options sounds good, but for older kids. You will want to be near hotel room for naps, etc. and you can take turns. Take advantage of hotel babysitting. Enjoy!!

I second Disney. It has some nice beach-y resorts that are like the beach, without the hassle, and it's so family friendly!

Went to Cancun in January last year and it was beautiful. Easy to get to and warm and beachy. In addition to the beach you can go to Chichen Itza (sp?) and other ruins nearby.

St Thomas -- we took our daughter when she was an infant. Cheap and not crowded in January, lots of American-style resorts and places to get baby supplies.

I love Disney world but would not take an 11 month old there...as someone else pointed out, I think a Carribean destination would be great because you are close enough to your room for naps etc. I can't imagine dragging an 11 month old around Disney and would certainly want to save that until they are old enough to be SO excited about it! (I still remember the commerical when I was little that had mom and dad wake up the kids one morning by saying, "We're going to Disney world!" I think that would be fantastic!)

FWIW, I have been to St. John and St. Thomas...St. Thomas is great but I LOVED St. John.
