Let's talk about hand me downs

Hand me downs:
Do you like / want to receive them?
Do you pass your kids things on?
Anonymous
Yes to both

Definitely yes to both.

We use what we like, and supplement as needed. Why buy new if you don't have to?

Yes I love hand me downs! I need 4T if you have anything!

Love them!

Not a fan. It never seems to be the season/style whatever I’m looking for and I hate sorting clothes so much. It’s not a matter of wanting expensive stuff, but rather being somewhat picky in what I find we use well. For example, for newborns I want cotton, zipper sleepers. I don’t want polyester ones that snap.

Yes to both. I had a cousin who was sending us boxes of stuff a few times a year - and she bought really nice, brand name stuff for her son. Our older son was about 4 before we really started buying new stuff for him - so nice.

DD2 gets DD1's hand me downs.

Then we give them away. I am a snob, and would never accept hand me downs from others.

It depends. I like them from one sister-in-law but hate them from another. lol Basically it boils down to quality of clothes. One of them passes on Gap, Gymboree, Cat & Jack while the other one passes on Walmart brand that after hundreds of wears and washes are scratchy and threadbare. I just don't see why she would think I would want these rags?

Yes and yes.
But - I only accept hand me downs under the same conditions I give them. I will not keep track of them and return things when we’re done with them. I give items to friends and neighbors freely and once they leave my hands they are yours to use, pitch, donate, upcycle, sell or whatever else you want to do with them without any judgement, comment or 2nd thought from me. Once I give them I have already forgotten who I gave what to.

yes and yes. We got hand me downs from two different people, one being my SIL. Stuff from my SIL we used all of (similar taste in clothing), stuff from other person we used about 75% of, but are passing along the things we didn't use.

Yes to this. Use, pass on, forget. I might give back larger objects (rock and play) but I am not remembering who gave me the carters bunny shirt.

Yes to both.

We had handy me down clothes until my DS was the same size of the kid a year older then he was. hehehe

Now DS hand me downs go to my cousins son. That includes clothes, crib, toys, books. Why not pass it on?

Yes and not really
I get hand me downs from my SIL and it's the right age spacing that it works out pretty good. I would gladly pass along clothes but our friends have kids either the same age or older or have an older sibling of the same sex. So our friend don't have need for our hand me downs. When we're done with it, stuff typically goes to the thrift shop.

This is the only practical way to do it, and it is a very sensible and thoughtful approach.
