| Has anyone had success treating jaw pain with massage? If so, would you recommend your masseuse? |
| I am in the midst of getting as recommended by my dentist. He sent me to Body Dynamics in Arlington where other patients of his have reported success. So far I have had two sessions. I felt relief immediately after but the pain eventually comes back. It's really hard to get appointments as one of the massueses is on maternity leave so perhaps that is part of the problem for me - that I am not going consistently enough - my appointments were 2 weeks apart and my next one will be 3 weeks after the last. I will keep at it though, since I have a lot of pain and can get reimbursed for it through work. It's definitely worth a try and if you don't mind the cost ($100/session) at the very least you get a nice massage. |
| I had temporary relief from physical therapy, which would be the same idea but probably more scientifically informed. |
| Same PP- just thought I should add that it is better to go after root causes than symptoms when dealing with jaw problems. Take it from someone who suffered for years. |
| Would acupuncture help? |
| What causes jaw pain? I've had it recently, for the first time in my life. |
My short answer is going to be muscle stress and/ or joint inflammation. If it's minor, try relaxing. If it's causing you some real trouble, see a doctor, but remember that this is a slippery problem and needs a specialist. Some neurologists deal with this, some oral surgeons do. It sometimes falls into the cracks between (rest of the body) medicine and dentistry. |
| also, tmj. i've seen a PT for this who can teach you some exercises and massages that you can do yourself actually. i also saw a dentist that specializes in TMJ who gave me a night guard to help fix my bite. i think the theory is that you clench/grind teeth in an effort to get your teeth to meet better so fixing your bite should alleviate this somewhat. |
It's all TMJ. Malocclusion is only one possible cause. There isn't a one size fits all solution. |
What are other causes/solutions? |

I have jaw pain and also my neck ( top - near m;y ears ) was hurting really bad, I went to the dentist thinking the my problem was my two wisdom teeth, so I ask my dentist to take my 2 teeth out, and also explain my problem. Then he told that i can use something at nigth when i go to sleep.... blah blah, Then I have changed the filling on my tooth ( back). Now the pain is gone... I try to relax try to excersive more and practice yoga (only streching)
I think my problem was stress Now I know how to relax and I feel much better. Less pain. |
