| How much does the roster size increase? |
Depends on how big your current roster is. They still play 9 v 9 at u12 unless your club is going to do the early 11 v 11 thing by playing up an age group. Typically no more on the roster than 15. |
|
7v7 U9-U10: 12 players maximum on the roster
9v9 U11-U12: 16 players maximum on the roster 11v11 U13: 18 players maximum on the roster 11v11 U14 and older: 22 players maximum, only 18 can dress for game day |
16 is a helluva lot for U11-U12. Our roster is 12. I know big Clubs do it for more kids/$, bit I’d want as much playing time as possible. |
| McLean 2008 had 15 players at the U10 age. More girls on the bench than playing in the game. |
|
Bigger clubs (sometimes) have smaller rosters because they can shuffle kids between 4-6 different teams.
Smaller clubs with only 1-2 teams in an age group could have larger rosters at younger ages because they need to start training the players they have. At U13 when teams go full field and a larger roster is needed, where the additional kids are going to come from is an unknown. |

Pretend you are McLeann 2008 u10 coach or TD, and only 15 players show up, not enough for 2 full teams.
Do you cut the pool to 12? And then hope those players show up for u11 and are good enough? Or do you try to balance it out for the best for all |
The size of the club doesn't really matter as much as the philosophy of the club. I've seen big clubs with huge rosters and small rosters. I've seen small clubs do the same. It just depends. Sometimes it is specific to a particular age group. It is a crap shoot. |
They should be the same. |
Not always. U12 they like to keep the roster a little bigger so they can sometimes play up to 11v11 tournaments. |
| Also the 6+ year bump to respond to a basic question - impressive |
This. Stinks when they are playing 9v9 but needed if they’re going to do 11v11. |
|
Have you ever heard about LS/NVA?
U11- 14 U12- 15-17 U13 -20+ |
| For the top u12 clubs almost all of them are playing atleast some 11v11. If they are only playing 11v11 they typically will have 16-18 kids if they are playing both 11v11 and 9v9 it’s usually 13-15 and they will add a few kids from 2nd team when they play 11v11 |
Not true on roster size but yes, syc has 13 playing 11v11 I believe, loudoun 17 and McLean 14ish I think. If you listen to any educated podcast, the are doing a complete disservice by playing 11v11 early, not to mention the awful competition because they aren’t in any competitive leagues. Avoid clubs doing this at all costs. |
