| I have a credit card with a few thousand on it that I rarely if ever use. I’m paying the minimum payment plus $50-100 extra each month. I was an idiot and completely forgot in February - so I technically missed a payment. I paid the past due balance today along with the March amount. I don’t mind the minimal late fee, but I feel like this will be devastating to my credit score! I’ve never missed a payment before and I’ve read it can drop your score over a hundred points. Anything I can do? And yes, I set up autopay so this won’t be an issue again! |
| It might not actually get reported. I have missed payments by accident before and they were not reported and did not show up on my credit report. |
| It's worth calling to beg your case. If it's the first time, they may be willing to waive the fee. |
Yes, this. If you've never paid late, they'll probably waive the fee. |
| Big deal. Chill out. |
I do this all the time. If I have been sick or travelling, sometimes payments get missed. BTW - set up automatic payments of minimum amount + $10 every month. That way you will not miss a payment. Then, if you have more money, make another payment in the same month too. |
This. The few times I've missed a payment (like once every 5 years), they've always dropped the fee when I called in. |
| If you have a special low interest rate this could crank it back up to normal. But no one reports to the credit bureaus before 30 days late. |
| This is not a 30 day late that would be reported to the credit card bureaus so no worries there. You would have to miss the second payment in order for that to happen. |
+1 We usually have some mistake every year or 2 and they've always dropped the fee when I've asked. |
| Same here - we always pay on time and in full, except when I'm human and make a mistake. I call them, explain the why (busy with kid, sick relative/out of town, busy and forgot) and ask them as a long time customer to please waive the fee. As long as you ask nicely, are a good customer and dont pay late regularly, they will do it. |
| This wont impact your credit score. |
|
Do you need your score anytime soon?
|
| This is not even remotely “devastating” to your credit score. You’re fine. Relax! |
|
Good God, get some perspective!
Call them and ask to have the fees removed - they have to do this once a year. 8 days isn't even really reported, and if it is, it is hardly "devastating" to an otherwise good credit score. |
