Rate for Bethesda Daycare? Help! :)

Anonymous
ello!

My daughter is turning 2. There is a home daycare in our area of Bethesda. Two full-time providers care for a maximum of four 2 year-olds. How much is a fair price? I want to be prepared before I call so I have a better understanding of what the average is. I’m looking for care from 8:30-5pm M-F. Do they typically charge by the hour (how much) or by the week (how much?)? Thanks for any help!

In home daycares set their own rates and rates vary greatly by location. You are looking for full time so in Bethesday I would not be surprised if the range was $250-$350. Since they have two full time providers I imagine it will be on the higher side. They do not charge by the hour.

In Bethesda I would think $350-450 per week.

The rates I saw a few years ago in Bethesda (2015) were around $350-$450 but some went closer to $500 per week. I'm guessing they'll have gone up since then, though I imagine it also depends how close they are to downtown/NIH/Suburban Hospital etc. You could call some daycare centers as well to see what their rates are - a home daycare should be at minimum $50-$100 less than a center as home daycares typically have shorter hours.

PP here these rates were for infants though, a 2 year old would be less - sorry!

Curious about what rates you are expecting.

For a ratio of 2-1 I would say around $300-$350 is fair.

That's a really low ratio - the state requires 1 staff for every 6 two year olds (and 1 to 3 for under twos), so I'd definitely expect at least $500 per week if not more.

You are right that it's a low ratio (that's a good thing), but the infant ratio is 1 for every 2 under two.

No, in Maryland the ratio is 1 staff for every 3 children. Family child care homes can have up to 8 children, including 2 under 2 with one staff for the 8 children.

That is, 1:3 is the ratio for infants. https://earlychildhood.marylandpublicschools.org/system/files/filedepot/3/staff-child_ratio_chart_-_child_care_centers.pdf

That PDF is for centers.

For Family in home daycares we can have a max of 8 children and only 2 of those are children under 2.
Some licenses are for max 8 kids with 4 of them infants but you need an extra adult.

OP can you tell us what they quoted you? I think anything between $350-500 is fair. I doubt any one charges by the hour, unless it's a penalty for late pick up.

Right - if the OP is saying the provider has two staff for four 2-year olds and no other children that is a very low ratio. Having 1 adult for 8 children including 2 infants is not a 1:2 ratio, that's a 1:8 ratio with a limit on the number of infants.
