Lent 2019... what are you giving up (or adding)?

Anonymous
Hard to believe it's almost Ash Wednesday.

After a lot of thought, I'm giving up alcohol (it's been way too present in my everyday life for the past year or so), deleting FB from my phone (again, a distraction that I don't really need and it doesn't make me a better person) and I'm adding a 6:30 daily mass once a week before work.

What are your plans?

This will be my first time in my life observing Lent. I wonder what I'll do. I came back to religion in my 30's and was never very thoughtful or serious about it before as a child

I'm going to give up sweets, except on Sundays -- everyone's weekly day off from sacrifice -- during which I'll pamper myself with cheesecake, peppermint patties and a big chocolate sundae.

I try to give up DCUM every year since it's a huge time suck for me.

We are going to do a decade of the rosary every day and a full rosary once a week as a family. I know a lot of people do this anyway, but we never do it. The kids seem really into it, so that will keep DH and I on the ball.
I have some friends who do Best Lent Ever as a married couple. I haven’t done it before, but it looks interesting.
I haven’t decided what to give up personally. I like the idea of DCUM.

The videos are just a few minutes long.

I’m giving up wine. (I have a work event during Lent at which I might drink a cocktail, but it’s really wine that is becoming an indulgence at home. I rarely dine out.)

Old DCUrban Mom here--I gave up alcohol for Lent in 1996 and never went back to it. I felt so much better on many levels. It was hard at first, but wasn't hard at all by the time Easter came. I'm happy I've never started up again.

Giving up clothes shopping. Adding a daily mass before work once a week as well.

I've noticed my video consumption has been creeping up lately. Cutting back on entertainment TV. Going to replace with educational videos & books.

If I do, and I did last year, I do traditional lent. No animal products at all. But, I have been following no grains(other than a bit of rice) and no sugar diet and just lost 5lbs... So, I don't know. I want to observe Lent but I also feel good about losing 5lbs. I am Orthodox so it starts on 11th.

I'm giving up the Methodist Church and their stupid focus on politics and social issues instead of Jesus and saving souls.

9:40 you are Orthodox in what religion? I have not heard of traditional lent or giving up all animal products.

I'm glad for this post as I did not realize Ash Wednesday is tomorrow.

I'm back on the chips, so I'll give up chips. LOL

I gave up alcohol a few years ago, and it also was a great decision that I've kept (but I'm not totally strict about, I'll have some wine here and there, but I notice that I can't get through a whole glass. How taste buds can change!)

I also gave up caffeine one year and totally blew it; my headache was so bad I thought I might be a dangerous driver. But the following year I gave it up (because I started slowly, a few days before, not cold turkey) and it was a GREAT decision; I'm much less anxious.
