What earrings do you wear with a "busy" necklace?

DH got me a lovely vintage like necklace that could be descibed as busy. It is gold and quite intricate. What earrings can I wear with it? Is it ok to wear something quite busy without wearing earrings? Or, is there a general rule that simple studs go with everything? I don't think hoops, right? I'm pretty clueless...

I would either wear no earrings at all, or some small golden earrnings that would match the gold of the necklace. Most probably, i'd wear no earrings.

You may go without earrings. If you prefer to have them, do match the gold tone and keep them very simple. Follow the scale of the necklace to determine the size of the earrings. As well, if the necklace has angular lines, the earrings should have them also. If the necklaces has curved lines, then the earrings should those.

I have little diamond studs that I wear when everything else is busy. They are tiny, about 1/2 carat each.

Small gold hoops or gold studs. The eye should be drawn to the necklace and the earrings should simply set off and compliment the gold tones of the necklace. Alternatively, if there are any jewels, enamel or color at all in the necklace, small studs of that color to pick it up and compliment it.

Is it strange looking to wear such a heavy necklace with no earrings?

I wear big, bold necklaces all the time. Usually skip earrings as it's "too much." This way, the necklace is the focal point and nothing else is fighting for attention.
