Expectant and Postpartum Moms
| I'm about to deliver #2 and #1 is 4yo. I've got some newborn diapers and size 1's, some old bouncy toys/swing, but what else is a must have in our home before we leave for the hospital? What kind and how many bottles should I get? Gawd it's been ages since we've had bottles! Help!!! |

For the bottles, I guess it depends on whether you are planning to breastfeed or bottle-feed or both. In any event, you want to make sure the bottles you get are BPA free. There are several brands that make BPA free bottles. Personally, I have the Born Free bottles and I love them but they are a little bit on the expensive side. Also, I have a microwave sterilizer to sterilize my bottles - it's not a necessity, but I find it really helpful: it sterilizes my bottles and pacifiers in 5 minutes in the microwave-quick and easy.
Of course, you need a bassinet or crib and depending on sleeping arrangements, you might want a baby monitor. Also, if you plan to swaddle, make sure you have swaddling/receiving blankets. Also baby wipes and stuff to bathe the baby: initially, you will just sponge bath the baby so you don't need a baby bath tub right away, but you might want to get baby soap and cloths/towels. A must have: burp clothes. Also bibs if you want to use those. |
| sorry, i meant burp CLOTHS. A good tip is to buy cloth diapers and use them as burp cloths: they are cheaper and more absorbent. |
| just thought about other stuff: a baby thermometer is very useful, rectal thermometers are more accurate for babies- Vicks makes a really great rectal baby thermometer. Also for you: lots of pads and Motrin for pain. |
| Also: baby laundry detergent: Dreft or similar and prewash baby's clothes with it, especially baby's " going home" outfit that you will bring with you at the hospital- also, remember that they won't let you leave the hospital if you don't have a carseat for the baby. |
Dreft has TONS of perfume on it. Just get some Free and Clear and use for the whole family. |
I agree, it is such a scam. We use the free and clear and it makes it much easier to throw the baby clothes in with ours, can't imagine always doing separate loads. |

I am a "new again" mom as well. Before my baby was born, I had bought only 4 onesies with pants, and 4 sleepers for him to wear. I don't know what I was thinking. My baby goes through 4 in a day (LOL). I quickly stocked up on more clothes, however the key items I use all the time are burp clothes and blankets for wrapping. My favorite blankets are the Gerber thermal blankets (they are stretchy and perfect for swaddling a newborn).
Other things: Mylicon for (baby's) gas Tucks mediated pad for hemorrhoids I'll think of more... |
My experience is that Mylicon does not work. Gripe water worked a lot better for my baby. |
