New Orleans at Christmas

Anonymous
We're staying in a romantic hotel, kid free, for 4 days around Christmas. Apart from eating, Jazz, and being in our room, what's the best thing to do? I want to see some historical sites, art, architecture. Maybe old south/Antebellum related. We will not have a car. We'll be in the French Quarter.

Thanks for the ideas! Also appreciate suggestions for best Beignet and best Etouffe.

I lived there for several years (pre-Katrina) and I am jealous! Cafe Du'Monde is the place for beignets and cafe au'lait and atmosphere! For traditional creole food and some nice sites take the streetcar uptown to Jaques Imo's (http://www.jacquesimoscafe.com/)

Native New Orleanian here- I would not miss the Jazz Preservation Hall- some of the best music in town.

This is the official tourism web site that can give you some great information: http://www.neworleanscvb.com/index.cfm

Most of the big antebellum homes are located outside of the city, along the river, but you have plenty of great architecture to see in the French Quarter. I would suggest taking the streetcar down St. Charles Street as well. Let's see....cemetary tours are cool if you like architecture. The Cabildo, the 1850 House.....

Hope you enjoy your vacation!

-Napoleon House on Chartres Street for drinks
-Snug Harbor and Preservation Hall for music

You really can't go wrong just wondering the streets of the Quarter. XMAS time is generally still pretty mild weather wise- enjoy !!

Cafe Du Monde for beignets. I loved the cemetary tours and the Garden District tours. I went for Christmas one year and thought I was going south. It was freezing. Mostly around 30 degrees F. much colder at night, so bring some warmer clothes in case a cold front comes thru.
