Puffy coats ok in regular seatbelts?

DH has been wearing a new coat that is thick and puffy. Should he remove that in the car? I know that kids can’t wear puffy coats in car seats but I’ve also heard they interfere with regular seatbelts too.

They are ok in a regular seatbelt and even a booster seat. They are NOT ok in a harnessed carseat.
