Fairfax county and turf field use

Anonymous
Just moved here and DD's coach sent out some standard forms and information including something that says Fairfax County does not allow chairs on turf fields. Does that mean parents need to bring blankets to sit on the ground or are they talking about no chairs on the playing field itself so parents can sit a few yards away?

No chairs on the actual turf. You can bring a blanket or set up your chair in the grass off the field. I just stand the entire time.

Thanks PP. How far away is the grass typically?

Most people just stand. Sometimes grass is somewhat close, sometimes not. Depends on the location. Also depends on how the turf is being divided for games. Sometimes even if there is grass, you wouldn’t want to sit there to have a decent view of the game.

Enforcement on this varies greatly.

Vienna's TMs are rabid about it. But they also get verklempt about gatorade, lol.

Most places take a more common sense approach. The concern is you don't poke holes in the turf. As long as your chair has the little plastic things at the bottom, I wouldn't worry about it. If the team has a portable bench or canopy and that's allowed, no one's going to get upset about you sitting in a chair.

Bring your chair and sit just to the edge of the turf. You don’t want to be closer than that or you may be run into. It’s fine.

And you’ll see some people are jerks or don’t know the rules about chairs on the turf. Like people who bring their dogs on school property.

The fields we've used typically have grass right next to the turf, and chairs are fine there. Arlington is the same way. Some fields have bleachers, too.

Folding bleacher seats come in handy at many fields!
