Great Ideas for school improvement in this forum! How can we get them implemented?

Anonymous
I've been reading through old threads on this forum, and some really great ideas have been expressed here and there. Here's an example of one thread: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/45/309661.page

Whether its creating campaigns to attract middle class parents, reconfiguring TAG program placements, applying for outside funding for community projects that engage parents, etc.

My question is has anyone tried to contact the county politicians to implement some of these ideas? Are they being expressed at town halls and school board meetings? Has anyone or any group actively lobbied for this? What about running for local office yourselves, or attempting to organize other parents to push for some of these things? I know there are local PTA/PTO groups that may do some of this, but things shouldn't be school by school, the whole county needs change and the administration has the capacity to spearhead this.

I have a hard time believing every single local government worker in the county are just ignoring things and want the county to fail, but also wonder how much of these problems are simply a lack of involvement from the citizens. I've only had good experiences dealing with county workers who seem shocked but happy to help and very forthcoming and responsive when they encounter an eager parent that is interested in the county's success. Which makes me wonder, am I the only parent contacting them? (I know this is not true, but what's going on?!)

FWIW, I think the PG county government has done a good job promoting the beautiful parks we have to prospective families.

Are there any blogs/sites dedicated to this type of activism that anyone can direct me to? (It could also be a DCUM thing to simply bash the county without contributing to its success, so maybe I'm just in the wrong place!)

No. No one has ever done these things. You are the first person ever in the history of PG county to think of testifying at a school board meeting or starting an advocacy group.
