pregnancy test...sort of OCD!!

Anonymous
Hello:

DH and I decided to try for #2 and I wondered when was the earliest time you had tested--and received a positive result--before your period was due. I saw a commercial for some pregnancy test that says it is accurate 5 days before a period is due. I wonder if this is bunk or if that's the norm now (I am older and #1 is already 11)! I am just really excited about the prospect and can't wait to test.

Thanks!

I think those tests are only 53% accurate 5 days out, and then they get successively more accurate the closer you get to your missed period.

I did a few days period my period and I got a positive with #2. I remember the first time I tried 5 days before and there was a faint pink line so i did again a few days later and the line was darker.

I took a test the day before my period was due - it was negative. Then three days later still no sign of my period (I am very regular) I took another test which was positive.

I took one 5 days before my expected period and it was negative. I tested again the next day and it was positive! I'm 34 y.o. and 5 months pregnant now -- this is my first pregnancy. My husband and I got pregnant on the first try - I didn't tell him I was testing so early b/c he would have thought I was nuts!! I was also super excited, like you, and wanted to test as early as I could.

I took the test 5 days before my missed period and got a negative and tried again two days before and had a positive. If you decide to try the absolute earliest, don't be too dissapointed if it is negative because it could just be too early. Apparently the First response early response tests are the most sensitive and have the best results in an consumer reports test.

I used the First Response test for both of my pregnancies and tested the earliest on the directions (5 days sounds right) and got positives both times. I'm sending pregnancy vibes your way OP!

Those "x days before your period is due" claims assume you have a standard luteal phase length (time from ovulation to period starting). If your luteal phase runs shorter than most, you probably won't be as many days post-conception when you are x days from your expected period as the test expects, so it may not be able to detect anything.
Fertilityfriend.com has an interesting page compiling some of their user-reported data on earliest positive HPT results: http://www.fertilityfriend.com/Faqs/When_can_I_expect_a_positive_HPT_if_I_am_pregnant.html
There's lots more info on that website about HPT brands, although for some of it you may need to register.

I took one 11 days after I O'ed and got a faint positive line.

Same here. Faint (but visible) positive at 11dpo. Stronger one at 12 dpo. I then ran out of pregnancy tests and started using leftover OPK's. Stong positives on those from 14 dpo on.

I got a really obvious positive 12 days after I ovulated (it was dark and unambiguous), but it turned out to be a chemical pregnancy and since then I have not tested even once before my period was late. Just keep that in mind, too. Sometimes it's great to know early, and sometimes it's not.

Have had definite, strong positives by 12 days post O with all 3 pregnancies. Had a definite positive at 8 dpo for #2 (which ended in miscarriage around 9 weeks), and a negative at 8 dpo followed by the obvious positive at 12 dpo for the current pregnancy.

All my tests were with First Responses, which are definitely the most sensitive on the market.

And agree with the PP that you may NOT want to test early, depending on how you'll react if it's a chemical pregnancy.
