| Have you had a child go through the lower and/or upper elementary at a Montessori charter? We are at one in the primary level now, but considering lottery. I am interested in what happens at those older grades that may be different/better than another model. Why did you stay and was your child well prepared for middle school? One thing I worry about is whether the kids are challenged enough to learn things outside their comfort zone and how they are motivated if peer competition is more or less absent. |

Good questions that I'm also curious to hear the answer to as my kid is in K at a Montessori charter. That was my question at some early open houses and I was always met with "oh, they transition just fine to traditional schools" and "they have such a love of learning and respect for teachers" from going through Montessori.
One other thing to be aware of (if you weren't already) is the Montessori Middle and High School being proposed for opening in fall 2020 https://thetruthschool.org/ |
| I have an upper elementary and a lower elementary child, and we LOVE it. I think that the special sauce of Montessori is actually in the older grades. My kids are learning how to make choices, plan their own work, and their guides do a great job of encouraging them to work evenly across all areas. Will your Montessori let you observe elementary? Mine did and it was what sealed the deal. |
Interesting. I do enjoy my 5 year old's emphasis on planning. What are the areas of work at the lower and upper el? Yes I'm sure I can observe when the time comes. |
This is exciting, are they approved to open yet? Site says "will open" but I don't think it's gone through approval yet? |
When are they applying? |
My understanding is that they are gathering letters of support and applying this spring. I don't know the nuances of the process, but I believe it's all happening in the next few months? |
|
The application is due March 7 and they either will or won't get it in on time.
So many HRCS elementaries have had less success expanding to middle school, I am not holding my breath. |
But, have they created a whole separate middle and high school? This is not an HRCS expansion. |
Nor is Breakthrough a HRCS. I see SSMA was not picked for the team at all. |
I don't think the SSMA admin is part of the planning and application process. But the Truth founder is holding info sessions for SSMA parents / collecting letters of rec from them, etc. |
| The MS/HS is being lead by the National Center for Montessori in the Public Sector folks, who are also who founded Breakthrough. They've brought in folks from Lee, CHMS, and SSMA for consultation and they're involved in the process, but this is really a NCMPS-led initiative. |
| Is the idea that only kids who have been in Montessori charters will be able to attend or will kids from traditional schools also be able to attend? |
And how will they afford to operate with such a limited applicant pool? |
This. Basically kids from Lee, CHML, and private Montessoris or schools outside DC? What about someone who graduated from, say, Langdon in 5th, went somewhere for 6th, and then wanted into "Truth" (Hate the name, btw) for 7th? |
