Did I commit myself to hosting this child’s birthday party?

Anonymous
Next week I invited a few kids over for a play date. I realized one child’s birthday is on the date of my play date. I said we could sing happy birthday and have cupcakes. I think mom thinks I’m providing the cupcakes.

Should I go out and buy paper goods and cupcakes?

And should I tell others it is this child’s birthday?

Yes. Buy some mini-cupcakes. This will cost you $10.

Why not clarify it with her? Just ask if she's bringing cupcakes. And no, you don't need to tell others it's the kid's birthday in advance.

ha unforced error. Sounds like you need to go get cupcakes, which really isnt too big of deal. Keep it as simple as possible by not telling the other kids ahead of time.

I think it would be sweet of you to get cupcakes for this playdate. Light a candle and sing happy birthday and otherwise have the usual playdate. Any more than that is probably overkill.

If the play date is at your house, and you suggested the cupcakes, then yeah, you should provide the cupcakes.

This is a little different than “hosting their birthday party”. I wouldn’t tell anyone else it’s their birthday. You’re jut doing something nice in honor of their birthday.

It sounds like you did offer to have cupcakes, but no need to get anything else. FWIW, sounds like you are a good friend.

"hosting a birthday party" What on earth? You're getting some supermarket cupcakes. You don't need to buy paper goods - just use whatever you have in the house or regular plates. Are you always so dramatic?

Just get some of those mini-cupcakes at the supermarket. Serve then as a snack and sing happy birthday. That’s not hosting a birthday party, that’s just doing what you offered to do.

Wow, just get full size cupcakes and yes you said we can have cupcakes so I would imagine you'd get them too. Why all the "get mini cupcakes"?

Ok will get cupcakes and will not tell others. I guess I thought she would bring since it is her child’s birthday.

Just cupcakes- it's not a birthday party.
