Out of bounds transfer process

Anonymous
My son is a 10th grader at Quince Orchard High School which is our zone school. He hates the school with a passion and said it is a very racist school and there have been some recent very serious racist events happening towards minority students that the school has been trying to address. My son is a good honor roll student that is taking AP courses but he feels that he would get a much better education at North West High School and would be in a social environment where he would feel more conformable. He begs me every day if he can transfer to North West but I thought I would have to wait to apply for an out of bounds enrollment for next school year. Is there a way for him to transfer to North West HS during this school year?

Honestly, I would not expect the county would approve a change of school assignment for what you describe, but I guess it can’t hurt to try. I know someone whose child was moved due to persistent bullying, but you would have to have documented all this and worked with the principal to try to come up with solutions. It is not enough for him to say he doesn’t like the social climate.

You need to have a meeting with your school principal and ask for the director to be present. They can help address your concerns and facilitate the transfer. If you go this route first, they can help expedite the COSA to keep you quiet. Transfers are at their discretion and not easily achieved.

If you are rebuffed, file the MCPS Bullying and Harassment form to document your child's concern before filing the formal COSA request.

Oh god this is such a troll. I'm sure he would love Northwest!
