Hi, I am currently a freshman at TJ. If you have experience with TJ, please help me by giving me information on course options. My current elective is Foundations Comp Sci, which I enjoy and would like to continue to Data Structures with APCS A. My current foreign language is Spanish 2, so I might like to finish that off with summer Spanish 3. On the other hand, to take AP Chem or Bio next year, I would have to take Chemistry over the summer. Thanks for your help in advance.

| If I take Spanish, would it be wise to fill the new elective spot with AP Econ? Or do you have any other recommendations for interesting courses? |
|
Posting in the advanced academic forum might get you more answers. Good luck.

I would strongly advise against only 3 years of a foreign language. |

OP, this would be a great email to your counselor at TJ. That's what they are there for. Send it today.

Why? Curious parent here. |
| I took seven credits and two ap exams worth of foreign language in high school and have basically never used any of it. Three is fine. |

Does Chemistry over the summer make any sense? I know my kid always needed a break, and I would worry about the quality of a summer course. Would you learn enough?
(Personally I think it is crazy to go to summer school, but if that is the culture at TJ, do the normal thing and don't listen to me.) |
Summer Chemistry through TJ summer school is required to take an AP science in sophomore year, and if taken, it is a requirement to take an AP science in sophomore year. |
Yes, and I also never used Multivariable Calc . This has nothing to do with practicality and everything to do with today's competitive admissions process. FWIW, I'm decades younger than most all of you, except the OP and just went through this only a few years ago. Think I ever used Stokes' theorem? Um no. In the real world, all I needed to learn in regards to math, I was taught in Algebra 1. Could have stopped right there and been no worse off than I am today |
