| Got email from the math teacher that my child is eligible for the summer math acceleration program at Deal. What was your child experience with it? My dc is on the fence about taking it. TIA! |
| OP, could you tell which level(s) they are offering this summer? |
| following |
It would be for 8th grade math. DC is in 6th grade but takes 7th grade math and qualified for 8th grade math this summer. I would think they offer all levels? |
| ugh why seriously why |
Have you had a child take summer math? If so, what was his/her experience. |
my DS did in 6th grade. It was fine. What exactly is your question? |
What was the summer program like? That is my question. Was it worth it? Did you child feel like they learned enough to go on to the next level? The day is 4 hours. What happened in the four hours? what was the homework quantity and quality? did they have quizzes and tests? |
I am happy they are reaching out to parents earlier this year. We got the email last year a bit later. My child had a good experience with this program. It was not easy as the pace is pretty quick. This year he is taking 9th grade math - the class is a mix of 6th, 7th and 8th graders. I have been very impressed with the Deal Math Team. |
Want to add: I have read on here in passing that some parents wished their kid didn't participate in the summer math because they missed critical info. I do not care what DC decides but want to share details so the decision is informed. Make sense? |

Was it worth it? For our child yes
Did you child feel like they learned enough to go on to the next level? Getting A's in 9th grade math this year at Deal The day is 4 hours. What happened in the four hours? It is a long day of math. It starts bright and early [possibly 8:30]. I know the kids had a session / a break / a session throughout the period. what was the homework quantity and quality? Enough to re-inforce what was taught during the day. did they have quizzes and tests? Yes - there is a quiz each week - and an end of summer test. They need to score a certain level at the end of summer test to moe to 9th grade math in the fall. Most students did. My DS liked it enough that he wants to take another math class this summer in lieu of other camps. |

Sounds like a great idea.
If only they did this also during the actual school year. |
Your post makes no sense. They do teach math during the year. |
I think it was worth it. DS learned enough. Quizzes and tests at the end of the week. DS enjoyed it. |
I think the point is why should kids be accelerated over the summer? What purpose does it serve? Is it a way to keep hyper competitive parents in DCPS vs going to the suburbs? |
