Both are obviously in hot water.
Would someone else down the chain be put in place or would a special election be needed? |
| Mark Herring (D), Attorney General, moves up. |

They probably wouldn't resign simultaneously. If the Governor resigned first, the Lt. Governor would become governor and could appoint a new Lt. Governor, who would then become governor upon the new Governor's/old Lt. Governor's resignation. If the Lt. Governor resigned first, the current Governor would appoint a new Lt. Governor who would become governor when the governor resigned.

| Isn't it nice that the Democrats gave us a two-for-one deal - the racist and the rapist... |
|
Doesn't look like either are going to resign.
|
| If they don't resign can we recall them or have a bill of no confidence? |
| I think they should both pull a "Republican" and not resign. Extra republican points for denying whatever actually happened. |
Basically this is what will happen. They will weather the storm, absent new and compelling evidence. |
The GOP beat us to it with Trump. |
My guess is they will weather it long enough to make sure nothing else comes out about Fairfax, and then if he survives that allegation, Northam will step down. |
| As for the governor... well so much for pps here telling me Virginia is not for....racists! |
| Interesting that this is all coming out now. I wonder why. |
This is correct. Other scenarios are not correct n |
Jeff, with apologies, not quite. Code of VA 24.2-211 et seq provide that, if the Gov resigns, dies or is removed, the LtGov moves up. But if there is a vacancy in the LtGov position then the President pro tempore of the Senate of VA becomes LtGov -and- also keeps his/her State Senate seat and right to vote in the Senate. The statute is extremely specific. Only if there is a vacancy in both Gov and LtGov can, in some circumstances, the Atty Gen automaticallybstep up to become Gov. |
