Why is Robert E Lee celebrated in Richmond?

In an official event:

"Sen. Richard Stuart, R-Stafford, gave a brief speech in support of Lee and asking that the Senate adjourn Friday in his honor. Saturday is Lee’s birthday.

“I rise today to celebrate the 212th birthday of Robert E. Lee and, Mr. President, I rise to celebrate his birthday because he was a great Virginian and a great American, and not because it has anything to do with slavery,” Stuart said. “I celebrate Lee on his birthday because he was a man with the strength of his convictions, and that is a rare trait, either in yesteryear or today.”"

And they also celebrated Stonewall Jackson? Today, in 2019?

WTF? We need to vote the GOP racist trash out of Richmond. This is unacceptable.

He was a great Virginian. Learn history. Be less intentionally ignorant.

Agree. You can't be a great American if you lead an act of treason. This is a ridiculous legacy of Southern appeasement; essentially letting the South write the history of the Civil War post reconstruction. Also why we have the United Daughters of the Confederacy with their prolific statue-raising and the Confederate flag supplication in response to the Civil Rights Movement and centenary of the Civil War.

Great Virginian <> Great American

You probably don't think the Civil War was about slavery either...

Racism is a thing.

A treasonous loser celebrated by racists pining for yesteryear when minorities weren't so uppity and knew their place.

The rituals celebrating Lee were established when the South avoiding talking about slavery, and the particular implication of Lee in slavery (the acts of his army in seizing free blacks in Pennsylvania, for example) were not widely known.

Now any change in them has become highly politicized.

Because they are racist. No need to search long and hard for some other reason. That’s it.
