Could Shonda Rhimes really not do better than Tony Goldwyn?

I know I'm late to the party but I just started watching Scandal. How on earth did they cast Tony Goldwyn as the love interest? He used to be somewhat attractive but something weird is going on with the invisible eyebrows and bony forehead. He almost looks like a cancer patient or a skeleton head. She is so gorgeous. It just does not compute for me. I'm a couple of episodes in. Does he get any better looking?

Tony Goldwyn isn't ugly but he's a very average looking guy whereas Kerry Washington is beautiful. For the role, this definitely makes sense. He plays an average guy who's able to date up looks-wise due his job prestige.

He wasnt supposed to be hot, he was supposed to be a coddled rich boy who had reached the white house because of white privilege male privilege and his father's money and contacts.

But I did think he was very hot in the first 2 seasons. After that the show just fizzled out and we made fun of the stupid storylines.

I think he's very attractive. Side (casting) note: I'm not sure who else was considered but I do know that once Kerry Washington signed on, only white actors were auditioned bc she didn't want to do the show with a black president who cheats.
