Do I really need to buy organic?

Anonymous
I don’t have a lot of money but usually buy organic apples and a few other things. I’m trying to save and I’m wondering how bad it is to just buy regular food?? I’ll always buy organic dairy because Americans put hormones in the cows (I’m an expat) but I’m wondering if it’s okay to just cut the strings and stop buying organic?

It's mostly not worth the money. They don't put hormones in the cows anymore. For select things like berries, they typically use a lot of pesticide so organic may be better. I'm a nutritionist and most of the time I don't buy organic food.

Check out the Environmental Working Group’s guide. They list the Dirty Dozen you should always buy organic (because of heavy pesticide use and thin skin usually) and the Clean Fifteen, for which conventional is fine. It’s updated every year.

I buy organic milk and organic meat. I think they taste much better and are likely healthier for my family.

I tend to stick to the clean 15/dirty dozen rule - or buy organic for things you don't peel to eat (like berries, leafy greens, etc). But things with peels (bananas, squash, citrus) I do generic.

All the regular milk and much of the cheese have labels that they don’t contain hormones.

No, you do not need to buy organig anything (surprise! They use pesticides too!)

And EWG is a joke.

I get organic carrots from WH for $2 a bag but that's it. I reason that I eat way better than 90% of the US population even if my blueberries are non-organic and cheaper.

+1

For a few things, organic might be worth it, but I mostly buy conventional and just wash my produce thoroughly.

ACSH has been funded by big agri-businesses and trade groups like Kellogg, General Mills, Pepsico, and the American Beverage Association, among others.

Americans do not put hormones in the cows. If you like the taste of organic, then go for it, but otherwise organic and non-organic dairy are similar.

I buy organic milk, but nothing else organic unless it's an equivalent price to conventional or only availble in organic wherever I happen to be shopping.

I buy organic as much as I can.
Yes it's more expensive but I'd rather skip a mani pedi or a meal out rather than getting regular food.

One health, one life.

I don’t buy organic. Waste of money.
