My 4 year old came down with fever, and persistent cough soon after receiving the mist. I am hesitant to give him the 2nd dose especially in light of a new study that shows it might not be necessary. Any opinions?

| the new study did not suggest it may not be necessary. see the other threads on this. i think the numbers were about 50% of kids were immune after one dose. took a booster to get 90%+ of kids to what is considered immune. your child may have enough immunity by now not to react to a second dose of the mist. |

Well why not? If your child somehow got the flu, the booster can't hurt him anymore. And if he didn't get the flu, he probably needs the booster.
The CDC says we still need the second shot. |
| please talk to your dr. Honestly, only a medical professional has the best answer for you. |
| my 4 yo tested positive for flu today he got his sesonal shot 2 months ago and his h1n1 mist 2 weeks ago. He said no need for a 2nd dose. He didnt vaccinate his own kids btw, nice to know after he told us to get it. |

Good question. What did your ped say? If it was h1n1 he got, i definitely would not do the second dose. These vaccines, while overwhelmingly safe, are not without risk. So why give him an unnecessary shot. I don't get that- people who are still vaccinating after they had the flu. People should be immune after the flu- that is the whole point of vaccinating..
on the same note, I really feel that one dose is not doing it for most (nothing scientific) I have just heard from so many people whose kids got the flu after the vaccine, so a second dose may be prudent.... I guess the question is- did he have mild side effects from the mist, or did he seem to actually have the full-blown flu? |
| did your ped say why he didn't vax his own kids? |
| My pediatrician is recommending that children get the H1N1 vax even if they already had H1N1. The strains can mutate and different strains can appear at different times of the year. |
