| Hello, we are moving to MoCo this spring. Our kids are at Yu Ying currently and I’d love to continue their Chinese. They speak Chinese pretty well for non native speakers (we’ve had many native speakers tell us one of our sons is quite good). How hard will it be to get them in? I know it’s a lottery but still am hoping somehow our previous immersion experience will be a plus to getting in. |
| Beyond 1st grade, it’s test in for open spots. My understanding is that the Chinese program ends up with more openings than the Spanish or French programs. For the lottery, the odds are low and the waiting list ends up being several hundred students long. Two years ago, DD was #370 for one of the programs. |
| Sorry, just realized you’re referring to the Potomac ES immersion. If I’m not mistaken, that one is open only to Potomac ES students first, and then a lottery for any open spots, if there are any. Nobody really knows the odds, but maybe somebody here can say how many new kids entered the program after K. |
| Bayard Rustin in Rockville now houses the other Chinese Immersion program. |
| The when the immersion program was at College Gardens the numbers would drop over the years. The 4th and 5th were sometimes combined after kids left for gifted programs in 4th. Not sure if that has changed but I would think the older your kids are the better chance they have. |
| What HS schools do these children attend after middle school? |
|
Julius West, the middle school in the RM cluster where Bayard Rustin is located, offers Chinese in Middle School and I assume on to High School.
Is there a Middle School in the Churchill cluster that also offers Chinese? |
Hoover MS: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/specialprograms/middle/immersion-chinese.aspx |
The immersion kids go to Hoover. JW does not offer the level for immersion kids. Transportation is not provided so many kids do not continue. |
is RM their only option? |
| Thank you so much! Op here, this is very helpful! |
