Creative Writing Workshops for Kids and Teens

Anonymous
Hello DC Urban Moms - I wanted to spread the word about a cool new opportunity for your kids and teens:

Writopia Lab (www.WritopiaLab.org) is an NYC-based, award-winning non-profit organization that holds creative writing workshops for kids ages 8-18. We have just opened a branch in Washington, DC and are now holding after-school, weekend, and summer workshops at the Wisconsin Avenue Baptist Church at Tenley Circle (two blocks south of the AU / Tenleytown Metro stop). If you can't make it to Tenleytown, we can also come to you! We will hold workshops at private homes and community partners throughout Greater Washington.

If you'd like to learn more about our program and to meet current students and teachers, here's your chance:

Writopia Lab DC Information Session
re: After-School, Weekend, and Summer Creative Writing Workshops for Kids ( 8-18 )
Saturday, November 14, 2009
3:30 - 5:00
Cleveland Park Library
3310 Connecticut Ave. at Macomb St.

All are welcome: kids, parents, teachers, school administrators, etc. We will give a brief presentation, answer questions, and help you register for winter, spring, or summer workshops!

HOW WE WORK:
  • After-school workshops meet weekly for 90 minute sessions for 10 weeks; Weekend workshops meet Saturday or Sunday for 2-3 hour sessions for 5-7 weeks (negotiable); Summer workshops meet for one week (Monday - Friday) for 3 hours per day;

  • Each workshop enrolls a maximum of 6 students and is led by a published, award-winning writer and experienced teacher;

  • The workshops, organized by age group, are peppered with original and fun writing exercises, but our primary goal is to help students pursue their own writing passions and to complete excellent pieces!

  • THE RESULTS:
    Each participant leaves the workshop with at least one polished piece of original writing. We publish completed pieces in a Writopia Lab anthology, and twice a year all participants are invited to read their work at a local bookstore. We also encourage students to submit to contests and publications, and our writers have had great success: In 2008 and 2009, Writopia writers won more national Scholastic Writing Awards than did any other group of kids in the country!

    We’re excited to be building a broad base here in DC, including students from the following schools (so far):

    Cornerstone Christian Academy, Eastern Middle School, E. L. Haynes Public Charter School, Eliot-Hine Middle School, Franklin Sherman Elementary, Lyles Crouch Traditional Academy, Maret School, Mark Twain Middle School, Mattawoman Middle School, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Academy, St. Thomas More Cathedral School, Sidwell Friends School, Walt Whitman Middle School, Washington Latin Public Charter School, Watkins Elementary
    ...
    and many more to come!

    See our website (www.WritopiaLab.org) for more information, or contact me at kathy@writopialab.org or 202-629-9510.

    I am happy to discuss our program, and if you can’t make it on Saturday, I am also happy to arrange a presentation at your school or community group. Thank you so much for your support!
