Elementary School-Aged Kids
| My son is a Boy Scout, and loves it. My daughter was a Brownie for a year and hated it--seemed to be just about the cookies. She's a spunky, athletic, not-too-tomboy who's not into crafty, girly stuff. She's ten and ready to rock. I'd love for her to meet some like-minded girls. Any suggestions? |

I've been trying to get a 4H program going in our area for a while. Still no luck. Maybe there's one in yours?
They have different themes programs, but at least some of them seem meatier than the Brownies. You might check out a rock climbing (indoor) center too. If you find something, please post again! |
| Not all girl scout troops are the same, it really depends on the leader. Call the local council and get names of leaders of several troops and call them up. What about camp fire girls? |
| Definitely different troops have different feels. The leader's attitude about camping will affect what the troop does. I would ask around about a different troop. |

Great first overnight camp for girls who like the outdoors. The Junior Camp week is 8/22 - 8/26 or something close to that. Check the website. It is a co-ed camp, but has this week for kids who are 8-11. High staff:camper ratio. Only about 30 kids there that week. My daughter loves it. |
| Try rockclimbing. There's a place in the area that has classes all year round in doors. Also Valley Mill Camp for the summer. |
| Calleva - mostly camp, but other activities also. It's run by relatives of the Valley Mill team, but it seems a bit less refined (in a good get-dirty-have-fun way). |

Does her school have a Girls on the Run program? Not quite the same as an ongoing group like Scouts, but might foster that athletic and strong-spirited side of her. There are GOTR Councils in NoVa, DC and Montgomery County. Spring seasons are about to get underway so now is the time to check it out if she might be interested.

| I second the comment about not all Girl Scout troops being created equal. My Girl Scout troop did a lot of wilderness hiking and went backpacking in the pouring rain, etc., because the leader was a big enthusiast, while others were having teas. You just need to find the right troop leader. |
