Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
| We might move to this district. Just wondering what others' opinions are on this high school. Thanks. |

Not the OP, but no one has any info re: this HS???
Bumping it just in the hopes someone will respond. |
| We considered houses in Fairfax City (which feed to FHS). I wasn't impressed with the school, but there's nothing wrong with it, per se. It's certainly not awful, or even "bad". We opted for a house in the Madison district instead. |

I think in the "heirarchy" of things, it's considered a middle of the road school. It's not considered a really good high school or a really bad one.
This HS is close to us, but for whatever reason I don't know anyone with kids there. |
| Fairfax is an average FCPS high school. It's fairly big but not as large as Robinson or Westfield. The test scores are about average for the county and the student profile pretty much mirrors the county as a whole. It tends not to get a lot of attention because the neighboring schools either have higher test scores (Woodson), better sports teams (Westfield), or both (Oakton). Having said that, I've never heard anyone with kids at Fairfax complain about it like some Madison parents complain about that school. |
| And parents complain about Madison HS because.... ? |
|
Some parents consider Madison quite inflexible. Students may be discouraged from taking challenging courses and then not allowed to switch out of courses they can't handle. I've also heard some parents say that athletes "rule the roost" at Madison and average students get very little attention. It may be that similar things are said about other schools and you just hear it more often about Madison because parents there have high expectations. If you look at sites such as Greatschools, however, you'll find quite a few negative posts. |

| Fairfax HS was built in the early 1970s and had a new additional built in 2007. Madison is a much older school, but was renovated 9-10 years ago. |
