My kid is thinking about getting his master's at Virginia Tech. It is not immediate but in few years time. This is just a plan.
If, he gets in, IF he gets good grades, IF he graduates with Masters. What is the salary outlook for grads. How do you see his salary in Computer Science in Five years from graduation, how about 10 years from graduation. What would be his job strategy, move up. What is his general outlook for future salary wise? What is the top ceiling? He is very bright, immesnly god in science of any kind, great student, great skills, fast learner. Just really really bright and awesome student. Fabulous attention to detail. Perfectionist and great with people and communication skills. All that any job would need aside from being brainy. It is all very foreign to me and trying to get some picture. He insists on VT because many of hees peers are going there. |

I went to VT and hardly anyone I knew graduated with the same major they started with..

| Pretty much unlimited income potential if he's as amazing as you make him out to be. I say he'll be worth a billion or more in the next decade. |
| Top is dependentof he stays technical or management. We hire undergrads at $75k in the dc area. Obviously much more in ca. In 10 years for us that about doubles and that's only doing technical work, no management etc, so not particularly stressful if you're good. |

Is this a joke? You're asking people to tell us what your kid's 5- and 10-year salary outlook is based on a school, master's program, and parental assessment of his great qualities?

To be honest, salary wise, a MS degree with the tuition cost these days is not a good ROI to bet on.
The market demands hot skills and the latest one too. Technology changes every 6 month or so. Keep up, jump a few times, in 5 years, you will be able to make $120k+ (today's money) if you know how to negotiate. 200k with 10 years under your belt. 2x that if your area of expertise is really rare and in demand (think finance, banking & AI for instances). 3x or 4x that if you ended up in a great company with options and bonuses. There are times & areas when degrees do matter however. Certain research fields need masters and PhDs. I know a few AI guys with PhDs make near or over 7 figures. They are not common though. |

Much of this is wishful thinking
I can tell you that at the large financial company in Virginia in Tysons, I work at we stopped hiring us college grads. We have a contract with TATA and they supply cheap guest workers from India and Mexico. Labor augmentation with managed service providers is the current buzz words. I have no other option. Just hired someone that was in country for less than a year. Should have gone to an entry level worker someone like your child but no more. Company is making more money than ever before and labor has been turned into a variable cost. And they cost about 50k a year for java developers. And they work weekends. |

Posters on DCUM almost always exaggerate potential salaries. I'm a nurse and posters say all the time "you can make so much money in nursing!" and they quote these ridiculously high salaries that have no basis in reality at all. |
