Opening an IRA

My husband and I are going to open an IRA for the first time. My husband and I max out our TSP and 403(b) respectively. Together we have about 850K in those accounts. Neither of us has ever opened an IRA and have both been in lifecycle funds in our other retirement accounts. We don't know much about investing. We have decided to go with Vanguard but I am unsure if we should invest in another targeted fund or one of those socially conscious index funds like VFTSX. Any thoughts about this? We are 43 and 45.
