So I was watching a few episodes from The Simple Life last night and honestly I was so appalled at how tone deaf, and insulting the whole show came across! The girls are awful and such brats and the blue collar locals come across as kind and well grounded.
The show thinks its funny to have these girls take blue collar jobs, be rude, act out and destroy other people's hard work. It also highlights the class and culture difference between the rich and the poor in the country and why Trump's America came into being. |
| That's MTV for ya. |
It started out on Fox and then moved to E!. Never on MTV for original episodes. I couldn't stomach re-watching it now, but I remember thinking Nicole was genuinely funny at the time. I loathed PH though from the time she and her sister were featured in Vanity Fair as the new wave of celebutantes. |
|
I wonder if she is super jealous at how her friends lives turned out versus her own. Kardashians- trash but rich and still popular. Nicole-married, kids successful
Business. Her sister- married into old British money, kids and design business. |
| It was a show about the global elite slumming it in flyover country - what do you expect? |
It was awful back then too. |
It really was. It was cringe worthy. |
|
| It really was an awful show. But I remember being surprised that both Paris and Nicole were actually pretty smart - even though they played dumb. |
|
It was one of the first reality shows that were successful.....
A trailblazer-type program. And the premise was original + creative for its time. Take two filthy rich socialites (the producers originally wanted Nicki Hilton but she declined), and let them live 28 days in a small, redneck town. No credit cards or cell phones allowed. I seriously doubt that Paris & Nicole actually LIVED in that silly little house. They probably only went there to film. It launched Nicole Richie’s career. But if she had not lost weight during the latter seasons of the show, then I strongly doubt she would have achieved the level of fame that she had. But her fashion career was quite successful and fans loved her brand.@ |
I doubt it. She’s still mega rich. |

This was the original Instagram Story, before IG or even "Influencers" came into existence.
The show accidentally became an inflection point in our time as a society. |
Yes and a social media icon. She invented being famous for nothing. |
She has a ton of Paris Hilton boutiques internationally that sell her shoe/clothing/handbag/sunglasses/etc. lines. She has like 23+ fragrances to her name. Plus she is an in-demand D.J. She can make up to a million a night for a ninety minute D.J. gig. Basically she is a successful business woman which is a huge plus since I’m keeping w/Hilton tradition, her Grandfather Barron Hilton will leave 97% of his will to charitable contributions so her inheritance has been cut. |
