Threadcrapping

Anonymous
I’ve been on the site a long time and trying to decide if there’s been an increase in people saying useless/rude things or I am just getting more annoyed by it? (I lean towards the latter).

I’m sure everyone’s seen examples— OP is planning a trip somewhere and someone says it’s a miserable place, or maybe a poster just insults the OP. Is this just average/inevitable in DCUM, or is it getting worse, or maybe is the general tone getting better which makes me notice the trolls more?

Oh well.

Please report these posts. If the posts are tolerated, then people will keep posting them. If you report the posts, I can remove them and the culprit will get the hint that such posts are acceptable (or I will give them a more obvious clue).

I've noticed it too, which is why I rarely post questions anymore. I just expect to be mocked/ridiculed etc. so I don't bother. Take this thread for example. It's a fairly innocuous question... having a husband go to a bachelor party vs. Stay-at-home first child's birthday.

https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/783922.page

I don't think anybody who has a child really would not understand why this would be a question, regardless of which side of the argument they are on. However instead of just responding, the things like "OMG, you are a psycho...hope your husband enjoys his bjs from other women (paraphrasing)", "You are crazy", "It’s wives like you that give all of us a bad name"

I don't really think these are the level of reportable, but thread crapping is a good word for it. There are plenty of reasonable responses to, I put the negativity I think has definitely gotten more noticeable.

I still read all the time, and I'm not going anywhere, but yeah... opiates not the only one who's noticed this trend.

*OP's not the only one...

You can report those post and just say that they are not helpful. If I disagree, I won't remove them. But -- and I want to emphasize this -- please report early in the thread. The thread to which you linked is already 5 pages. That means more than 70 posts. I simply don't have the time or interest to go through that many posts to clean up a thread. Not only is it easier for me to clean up a thread while it is still short, I think that helps set the tone and keeps things civil longer.

I’ve been getting a ‘forbidden’ message when try to post. Have I been banned somehow? I don’t threadcrap but have had pointed exchanges (ie if I have concerns I describe in detail)

I've been testing some new mechanisms for blocking trolls. You are probably getting caught by a false positive. I don't see any recent posts from your IP address that were blocked though, so I can' offer more information than that.

PP here. I just used that as an example because it was the reason why I came to check website feedback to see if anyone else had the same thoughts as I did. I will report more often, but I am still curious... Do you have any way of measuring if this type of behavior has increased?

I wanted to just say thank you to Jeff for deleting the ones that I report. Once I understood that Jeff is just as interested in making the forums useful as we are, I started using that function more. However, now I'll just note the obnoxious, unhelpful, trolly posts as "threadcrapping" instead of trying to formulate a full sentence.

Perhaps Jeff can periodically tally for us X number of threadcrapping posts removed this week...
