good pet supply store in NW?

Anonymous
Getting our first puppy in three weeks and need to do the shopping now. First dog I've ever had so I'm new at this. I have the recommended lists, but it would nice to work with really knowledgeable staff at a local pet supply store. Can anyone recommend a store in NW (Glover Park, Foxhall, Palisades, Tenleytown areas) that currently has good staff to help out a first-time dog owner? TIA!

Most of what you need you need, you can get a lot cheaper by avoiding a local pet store. Food is something to spend on and your vet can guide you there. For a collar, ask for the dogs neck size as it gets closer, they outgrow them fast so no need to splurge on anything fancy. Leashes, food bowls, bed, crate etc you can get either online or at places like HomeGoods or PetSmart. Do you have questions about specifically what to get?

PetMAC on Wisconsin between Tenley and Friendship Hgts. They are very good for getting you started.

I'll put in another plug for them - local business which has struggled at times due to raising rents and construction along Wisconsin. They are a great store and they do lots of rescue. My kids love to go buy food as there are usually cats running around in the store!

They know their stuff too. Please patronize them.

I have always found the people at PetMac to more than a bit scattered. Would not be my first choice. Also the store never seems to be clean.

Try Krisers at Cathedral Commons. They are great and super helpful and nice. They have everything you need to get you started from food, beds, collars, leashes, treats, shampoos, brushes, etc.

I agree with previous PP's that sometimes it is easier to get supplies on line but if this is your first pup I think you need to actually go to the store and talk to people.

Good luck and congratulations!

I am the PP that posted about Krisers. If you want something that is not a chain, Chien de Luxe on Macarthur in the Palisades is also very good and has knowledgeable and friendly staff!

OP here - thanks so much for the recommendations - will check them out!

Definitely PetMAC in that part of town. They give excellent advice and teally care about your pets. They can also recommend a variety of vets in the area including a vet who does home visits!
