Skipping period when on the pill

Anonymous
Figured I would post this here rather than off-topic since it is a women's issue. I am on the pill and am supposed to start the placebos next week. If I skip the placebos, will I not get my period this month? If I take them as usual I will get my period while on vacation next month and I'd like to avoid that if possible (ie, if I just start the next pack right away I should get my next period the week before my vacation). TIA.

I never take the placebos. You will get your period whether you take them or not. They are simply there for routine purposes.

Do you mean skip the placebos and start taking next pack right away? If you do that you should not get your period. (caveat being that some women can have spotting - just depends on your body.) My OB has me take 3 packs in a row since periods so bad. Thus I got period 4 times a year. It is was Seasonale pill is but without the marketing.

OP here... yes, this is what I mean, so skipping the placebos and starting the next pack right away pushes everything one week earlier. My periods aren't all that bad, but we are flying internationally and I just don't want to have to deal with it if I don't have to. Thx for the comment, that is what I thought but never did it before.

You might still get spotting if you are on a triphasic pill -- varying degrees of hormones by week -- rather than a monophasic pill that's a steady supply of hormones.

I did this all the time with monophasic pills. I just hated dealing with a period! Once I'm done nursing baby #2 I'll probably go right back to doing it, too.

NP here, I've also skipped the placebos and jumped to the next pack to accommodate beach trips and international travel...and for general convenience. I found it worked very well with ortho-tricyclen but with a newer triphasic I've sometimes had a day or two of light spotting.

Enjoy your trip!

I used to do this when I was on the pill, and I also did it with NuvaRing. Found I could go for 3 or 4 months at a time, and then I'd have some spotting so I'd go with it and have the withdrawal bleeding for a week, then start back up again. It was the greatest thing ever and I would do it again in a heartbeat (except I'm pregnant now and planning on an IUD after the baby).

The only trouble you might run into is picking up your prescriptions earlier. See if you can get your clinician to write your prescriptions in such a way that your insurance won't have a problem if you're getting your pills or ring more than once a month.
