Wait-listed for APEX: do they take kids from the waitlist?

Anonymous

My son just received a wait-list notification from the APEX coordinators at Walter Johnson.
Is it like the magnets, where practically no one ever gets off the wait-list, or is there a chance he may be invited to attend?
And if so, do you know if the APEX wait-list is ordered, or are candidates invited by lottery?

Your experience or advice is appreciated.

I don’t know how they pull from the waitlist. But I am sure there has to be some movement, thus the need for the waitlist. I’m sure many kids who applied to APEX also applied to RMIB and SMACS, so some will get in and take that spot. Other students may move away or go private.

I wouldn’t be shy about asking your question of the APEX coordinators.

I will keep my fingers crossed for your DC! My DS is a junior at WJ and has friends in the program as well as friends outside the program who are taking rigorous and challenging course loads and doing great. It also has seemed to us that WJ is a happy and well-run school and my DS has had a really good experience there.

My daughter got into APEX off the wait list. But there are plenty of smart kids at WJ not in APEX. ACES is also a nice program.

Thank you, PPs.

I re-read the email they sent us and they explain that the wait-list is ranked: do you think the coordinators would mind if I asked them whether DS had a chance, given his rank?

And 17:55: when were you notified that your DD had gotten off the wait-list?

I think it was over the summer - she was able to attend the APEX orientation in Aug. We did communicate with the APEX folks (who are really nice BTW) and sent updated grades from the spring and additional extracurriculars. I am pretty sure they rank the waitlist (grades plus test score etc), but it seemed like several kids got in off the waitlist. But WJ is a really great school, whether or not your student is in APEX. Lots of great kids, teachers, staff, classes, clubs, sports etc. ~ 17:55

LOTS get in off the waitlist. We have 2 kids in, and both years at the panel half of the student panel got in off the waitlist. It's because so many get in at Blair and RM - that is what will open up spots...

Does anyone know how many kids got into RM and Blair from the WJ cluster last year?
I was under the impression it was only a handful of kids.

Some kids will also go private, move etc. Not sure how many go from Tilden/North Bethesda go to RM or Blair, but definitely some do. Lots of smart kids.

In my DC's class, he knows of only a handful who went to Blair or RM (only 1 went to RM). DC is in APEX but plenty of really smart kids are not, and they can take just as many AP courses, so honestly your son will be great whether he gets in or not. Don't stress. It's a great school.

To the poster whose kid doesn’t know many kids who went tothe magnet programs from WJ cluster:
Remember, there are kids in magnet middle schools who are zoned for WJ. Those kids applied to APEX, as a back up to the magnets they applied to. When they get in to a magnet, they’ll go, and open a spot. Some of those kids have been out of the group since third grade, so the kids on the typical track might not even remember them.

APEX is an honors, test-in program at WJ HS. I think it's a way to try and keep top kids in the school (meaning not go to Blair, RM, etc).

Do other schools have similar programs?

Yes, I believe BCC has an IB program also to try to keep high performing kids
